Williams has upside, maybe, depending on how purple your glasses are and how loosely you use the word "potential", but our defense just took a hit. We've heard for months now how we're going to be a franchise who values defense, that's the important end of the floor, yet here we are making yet another non-defensive deal and a deal which on the face of it sets us back a decent amount on that end of the floor.
Williams is not a good defender. He's soft. Not good on the glass. Not much of a presence out there at all. Mbah filled a specific role for us, one we hadn't been able to fill for years and was getting better and better at it. Now we've got that same hole again. Even if Williams starts shooting the ball better than he has since drafted and starts shooting 38% from 3 and helps spread the floor, we've still attempted to fix one problem by creating yet another. We'll be worse defensively. A Vasquez/MLM/Williams trio on the perimeter would likely be well below average on that end, the end which we keep being told is the priority. Defense first. Well, this move along with previous transactions clearly suggests otherwise.
It's not just about talent, it's also about the role(s) you can fill. Mbah filled a very valuable role, not only on our team but a role many playoff teams have. A physical, above average defender on the wing who moves the ball and doesn't take bad shots, stays out of the way. Many times more talent actually does less for the team. My biggest issue with this move is Mbah plays a style that succeeds in the playoffs and fills a role which needs to be filled to get to the playoffs. IMO even if Williams shows some of his talent and improves some, it's not a role we need filled nearly as bad. A soft, perimeter shooter. That's not a blueprint for success, not when you give up a defender of Mbah's caliber for it.
There's a reason Minn, a team heading towards the playoffs, wanted Mbah but wanted nothing to do with Williams. Role being filled was greater than actual talent lost.
