New Kings Arena Design Concepts

#4
I saw the News10 report and it was mentioned that the Arena will use our Delta Breeze as a natural air conditioning or something along those lines.

Just kind of a quick reaction...

#1 - As far as the design goes, don't hate it, don't love it.
#2 - The park on the roof really does make about no sense, though the fact that there's a walkway up to it is at least kind of interesting.
#3 - The blobby stuff is basically hideous.
#4 - Now here's the interesting part. Both #1 and #3 appear to show the exterior counterpart to this shot - a plaza that opens up to the outside (presumably weather-permitting, so sliding glass panes or something) allowing a view of the court from one baseline (perhaps both?). Considering that baseline seats are generally less desirable than sideline seats (at least in my own personal bias) it makes some sense to reduce seating there. The narrow strip at the second level above the plaza (also visible in #1) appears to have some standing-room seats (again, good idea for baselines) and perhaps some box-type seating above that. The point being that in the less-desirable area on the upper baseline, most "seats" seem to be front-row seats, which would increase their value.

I can see how the Delta Breeze could be used for cooling - weather permitting - but in general I think that's a bit gimmicky. It's not like they won't have an air conditioning system and I doubt that open-air conditions will be terribly common. But hey, could be wrong. With the right design, moving outdoor air on a pleasant night could save some electricity, but the trick is probably figuring out how to get the system to work well across a range of outdoor temperatures. What if they want to open the arena, but it's hot out? Can the A/C handle that in a non-wasteful manner?

Anyway, great to see arena designs after all we've been through the past few years! The open-air concept does look intriguing - and with the unusual backdrop it might present it could give us a nice home-court advantage (in the second half?) over teams not used to shooting into it.

@benvsacbiz: #Kings put out statement saying new arena renderings a #Sacramento TV station is touting aren't official or released by team.”

Doesn't mean much at this point I guess, as they can be not official or released by the team but still be what is being considered.

Also looks like these are some completely different designs being shown. At least in the case of photos 1 and 3.

Wasn't there an article that said Radadive had turned down 12 designs? These could be one or several of the 12.

I'll get excited when Vivek yells "Yippee!" and shows what he likes as it sounds as if he won't settle for anything that isn't startling and tasteful. He has his ideas about how the inside will be wired for fan comfort but he clearly said he wants a building that would be noticeable like the Sydney Opera House, the TransAmerica Building, and I presume the Chrysler Building. Buildings that when shown to a tourist have the stamp "Sacramento" firmly emblazened on it because it is so striking. He doesn't settle for second best, does he?

I am assuming that one spectacular design wouldn't cost much more than the average circular arena.

Yeah a couple of these look like different designs all together. News10 said that the Kings didn't release these images News10 said they "found them" lol

They did play a vid of Chris Granger mentioning the Delta Breeze thing though.

Rooftop greenery is often beneficial. It often reduces cooling costs, which reduces energy consumption, and that then reduces the cost of running the arena and the strain of the arena on the local grid.

Doesn't that look like a road on top of the building? I don't understand the structure that cuts the mini forest in half. In any case, it is unique. For awhile I thought the arena was below ground level and cars or service vehicles could drive around it and over it. I think I'll see if I can find any more pictures.

I like how you're thinking. A race track on top of the arena. Bring NASCAR to Sac.

I think it is just a set of wide pedestrian walkways. Walkways are typically designed to handle at least light vehicular traffic though for maintenance, etc., and with gardens up top I am sure that would be the case here. Doubt they will do any racing up there, though!

Darn. I was looking for a little of NASCAR. Sadly, I am sure you are correct.

Copied directly from an e-mail my dad received...

"Thank you for your RSVP to the exclusive event with the Sacramento Kings this Wednesday, October 23 at Sleep Train Arena! At this private event, you will have the opportunity to hear about the future of the Kings, the vision for the new downtown arena and have the chance to secure your place in the future of the Kings by committing to season tickets."

I don't know if anyone else on here is going tonight...I will definitely keep you "updated" if I hear anything worth while and worth reporting....I hope they don't turn this into a "Let's commit you to season tickets and not talk about the future and our vision"...

I love trees and grass. I just prefer that the trees and grass are on the ground.
I'm just guessing but the pics presented in this thread look like all different concepts. And I have a feeling they were a part of the concepts that Vivek and Co already rejected. So I doubt there's going to be a Caesar Chavez Plaza on top of the new Arena. Heh.

I think you are correct that these are designs that in their entirety have already been rejected but I also suspect these are the best submitted so far and are clues as to what we might see as a final design.

I could very easily be wrong on this, but I think most of these designs were submitted before the actual architect was brought on board. I could swear at least one of them had floated around back before the Maloofs pulled the plug on the previous arena deal.

The open-air plaza concept is new, though, right? I think three of the four pictures (all except the roof-park one) have a clear open-air plaza. Was the roof park arena the one you thought you saw before?
