Monarchs veteran Yolanda Griffith signed a one-year contract worth a league maximum $93,000 on Tuesday, choosing to stay in Sacramento to play her ninth WNBA season.

General Manager John Whisenant said he expected the 37-year-old post player to return to the team, but he was relieved to have the contract signed.

"She's an inspirational leader for the Monarchs," Whisenant said.

Griffith has averaged 15.1 points and 8.5 rebounds with the Monarchs since she was drafted in 1999. A six-time WNBA All-Star, Griffith led the Monarchs to the 2005 WNBA Championship and was named Finals Most Valuable Player that year. Last season, the Monarchs finished one game shy of defending their leaguie title, falling to Detroit in the deciding Game 5 of the championshiop finals.

The Monarchs open training camp April 22 and will play their first preseason game May 11 in Seattle.

Woohoo! Yo decides to play for the Monarchs for one more year! I have a hunch feeling this will be her last year as a player.

From today's (April 11, 2007) Sacramento Bee, the story is slighly more fleshed out from yesterday's bulletin:

It might have taken six months for Monarchs veteran Yolanda Griffith to officially dismiss the retirement talk, but she did so Tuesday by signing a contract that will keep her in Sacramento for at least another year.

"I'm not ready for anyone to take my job," Griffith said by telephone Tuesday.

Griffith signed a one-year contract worth a league-maximum $93,000 to play her ninth WNBA season.

Though Monarchs general manager John Whisenant said he expected the 37-year-old post player to return, he was relieved to have the contract officially signed.

"She's an inspirational leader for the Monarchs," Whisenant said.

Griffith has averaged 15.1 points and 8.5 rebounds with the Monarchs, who drafted her in 1999. A six-time All-Star, Griffith led the Monarchs to the 2005 league title and was named the Finals MVP. Last season, the Monarchs finished one game shy of repeating as league champions, falling to Detroit in the deciding Game 5.

The Monarchs open training camp April 22 and will play their first exhibition game May 11 at Seattle.
