[OLY] Winter Olympics 2026, Milano/Cortina d'Ampezzo

That begs the question, why was the Bronze Medal game on a different day? That seems unique to men's hockey.
I think because they have been making the Gold medal game special as the closing event of the winter games for a few cycles now. I don't think it was always that way, my memory dates back to Calgary.

Oh I absolutely do I just thought after people called out the absurdity with the women's match they might rethink it.
I don't think it's absurd, it's just a situation that's fraught with emotion... It's one of the reasons why I gravitate towards sports like athletics (track and field) and swimming: like, you can win Silver in bobsled, you can win Silver in speed skating, you can win Silver in cross-country skiing. You can't win Silver in hockey, though, you can only lose Gold. I reckon it's a big reason why Bronze medalists tend to look happier at medal ceremonies than Silver medalists.

That's all well and to the good, but saving the Gold Medal game for last (which they've done with basketball at the Summer Games for decades) doesn't explain why they play the Bronze medal game on a different day?

Isn't the marathon the last event of the summer games?

I think it has something also to do with timing the event - this was a mid day game so they could have closing ceremonies at 5 local time or something, they wouldn't have time to play both, and refresh the ice in a manner fitting for the gold medal game maybe?

The marathon is typically the last medal given, but they usually run it first thing in the morning, whereas the basketball isn't usually until the afternoon. They just wait until the Closing Ceremonies to present the medals for the marathon.

I mean, they played both on the same day for the women, so I feel like they could have figured out the "refreshing the ice" thing? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'll be honest I have never given much thought to it, seems they have done it that way in years past from what I remember so I didn't even question it. World cup plays the Bronze medal match the day before and I might be misremembering but thought they did soccer in the Olympics the same way, I feel like other olympic sports might do it that way too?

I'm not as tapped into the Winter Games as I am the Summer Games as, outside of Bobsled, Luge and Curling, the Winter Olympics aren't really relevant to my interests. But a quick glance at the schedule for Paris seems to indicate that the Bronze Medal and Gold Medal games in team sports were played on the same day for basically every sport except soccer.

^^^^ But, leaving all that aside, even if I were to accept the premise that there might be a good reason to have the Bronze Medal game on a different date than the Gold Medal game, I do not stipulate that there's a good reason for there to be more than one medal presentation. I'm not with that, at all.

End of the day Canada played most of the game in the US end which surprised me given the pace of the first period and the relative ease USA dispatched of Slovakia vs. the Finland match for Canada. But they couldn't solve Hellebuyck. This guy even failed to get hit shot on net when they did beat him. Oh and then he went on to misplay Werenski on the game winning assist. Wow. This is never a good look but it's horrible coming from MacKinnon.

Hellebuyck put on a class like Dominator in Nagano. Six guys on the ice my dude.

late edit:
Just rewatched Boldy's goal and yeah, I'm definitely not being too harsh on the guy...

Revisiting some of the alpine events now that I am through my hellish work week. Looks like Peacock will have through July so I will watch the fun ski and snowboard stuff this week. And maybe watch that hockey game again because it was so good. Especially the first period. I know the commentator on ice mentioned it, but it was evident from TV that the guys were skating with a pace you don't usually see in the NHL. I was quite surprised this didn't benefit the US team as the game wore on given the ease of which they dispatched Slovakia. And I loved that the refs for the most part just let them play. I bet the NHL is gonna be fun the next few weeks as a lot of these guys have to be teammates again.

I will watch both men's AND women's gold medal matches a couple of times before I actually delete them from my DVR - they were that dang good!

The overall pace of play that was on display in Italy was absolutely unreal. And to see how incredible the defense was on both sides of each gold medal match (men's and women's) was something you hardly see on display in the NHL. Absolutely incredible to watch!
