60 minutes of hockey is not enough.
You don't need to hide it, pdx, we all know you love those stuffies!Oh no, I see the tray of stuffies next to the medals.
From what I recall they give the medals out immediately after the medal matches and don't wait for the Gold/Silver.Where da Fins at?
How can you not love the dissonance of all these tough-guy types being handed a stuffed animal after losing a game?Oh no, I see the tray of stuffies next to the medals.
Grown men lose a gold medal match and get a stuffy. You don't need to hide it, pdx, we all know you love those stuffies!
Oh I absolutely do I just thought after people called out the absurdity with the women's match they might rethink it.How can you not love the dissonance of all these tough-guy types being handed a stuffed animal after losing a game?
That begs the question, why was the Bronze Medal game on a different day? That seems unique to men's hockey. From what I recall they give the medals out immediately after the medal matches and don't wait for the Gold/Silver.
Don't all the Olympians get them, though?Oh I absolutely do I just thought after people called out the absurdity with the women's match they might rethink it.
I think so, and from what I remember of certain items in Vancouver they can be quite rare and sought after. But still.Don't all the Olympians get them, though?
I think because they have been making the Gold medal game special as the closing event of the winter games for a few cycles now. I don't think it was always that way, my memory dates back to Calgary. That begs the question, why was the Bronze Medal game on a different day? That seems unique to men's hockey.
I don't think it's absurd, it's just a situation that's fraught with emotion... It's one of the reasons why I gravitate towards sports like athletics (track and field) and swimming: like, you can win Silver in bobsled, you can win Silver in speed skating, you can win Silver in cross-country skiing. You can't win Silver in hockey, though, you can only lose Gold. I reckon it's a big reason why Bronze medalists tend to look happier at medal ceremonies than Silver medalists.Oh I absolutely do I just thought after people called out the absurdity with the women's match they might rethink it.
That's all well and to the good, but saving the Gold Medal game for last (which they've done with basketball at the Summer Games for decades) doesn't explain why they play the Bronze medal game on a different day?I think because they have been making the Gold medal game special as the closing event of the winter games for a few cycles now. Isn't the marathon the last event of the summer games? That's all well and to the good, but saving the Gold Medal game for last (which they've done with basketball at the Summer Games for decades) doesn't explain why they play the Bronze medal game on a different day?
The marathon is typically the last medal given, but they usually run it first thing in the morning, whereas the basketball isn't usually until the afternoon. They just wait until the Closing Ceremonies to present the medals for the marathon.Isn't the marathon the last event of the summer games?
I mean, they played both on the same day for the women, so I feel like they could have figured out the "refreshing the ice" thing? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯I think it has something also to do with timing the event - this was a mid day game so they could have closing ceremonies at 5 local time or something, they wouldn't have time to play both, and refresh the ice in a manner fitting for the gold medal game maybe?
Ratings, and I suppose also to be able to schedule both games at a decent time (at least for international viewers, such as those of us out here in the US of A).That begs the question, why was the Bronze Medal game on a different day? That seems unique to men's hockey.
The popularity of men's hockey compared to the women's game might have had something to do with this.I mean, they played both on the same day for the women, so I feel like they could have figured out the "refreshing the ice" thing? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'll be honest I have never given much thought to it, seems they have done it that way in years past from what I remember so I didn't even question it. World cup plays the Bronze medal match the day before and I might be misremembering but thought they did soccer in the Olympics the same way, I feel like other olympic sports might do it that way too?I mean, they played both on the same day for the women, so I feel like they could have figured out the "refreshing the ice" thing? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm not as tapped into the Winter Games as I am the Summer Games as, outside of Bobsled, Luge and Curling, the Winter Olympics aren't really relevant to my interests. But a quick glance at the schedule for Paris seems to indicate that the Bronze Medal and Gold Medal games in team sports were played on the same day for basically every sport except soccer.I'll be honest I have never given much thought to it, seems they have done it that way in years past from what I remember so I didn't even question it. I will watch both men's AND women's gold medal matches a couple of times before I actually delete them from my DVR - they were that dang good! And maybe watch that hockey game again because it was so good. Especially the first period.
The overall pace of play that was on display in Italy was absolutely unreal. And to see how incredible the defense was on both sides of each gold medal match (men's and women's) was something you hardly see on display in the NHL. Absolutely incredible to watch!Especially the first period. I know the commentator on ice mentioned it, but it was evident from TV that the guys were skating with a pace you don't usually see in the NHL. I was quite surprised this didn't benefit the US team as the game wore on given the ease of which they dispatched Slovakia.
