Doug Christie, acquired by the Orlando Magic in a trade with the Sacramento Kings, showed up at The Palace of Auburn Hills about 2 1/2 hours before the game, coming directly from the airport with his ever-present wife, Jackie.
Christie took a physical and was available to play his first game. However, Coach Johnny Davis chose not to put him in the game.
"I got the jersey on, so I don't know. That's what I came here to do," said Christie, who was traded to Orlando for shooting guard Cuttino Mobley and forward/center Michael Bradley on Monday. "If they need me, whatever, I'll be ready."
Christie, 34, said the toughest thing about leaving Sacramento after five years was "we have to uproot our kids, and that's tough." The Christies have three children, ages 3, 11 and 14. "My youngest was fine when we told him we were going to see Mickey Mouse," he said.
"During the middle of the season, it's a little difficult. You have five years of stuff to pack in 72 hours, get it all together, sign the papers. But we did it."
Christie said the moving van is en route to Orlando, and he will start looking for a home next week.
Reality series looks likely
Christie also said that it looks as if he and his family will be working with VH1 on a reality series. A contract has yet to be signed. His agent, Bradley Marshall, is meeting the Christies in Orlando to help them with the details, among other things.
The VH1 crew started following the Christies in Sacramento, and he says they will come to Orlando.
"We're going to have some fun with it, really. Yeah, we'll see what happens," he said.
He said a crew was filming them while they packed boxes for the move.
"You know how the media loves controversy and drama," Christie laughed. "They came to get little clips of us."
