If we get enough people responding, I'd like to get a poll started and add everyone's choice of pitchers to it.

1. Jake Peavy
2. Roger Clemens
3. Chris Carpenter

I can't believe I forgot about Zito, edit. And some may ask why I have Peavy on top, for one, Padres fan here, two, he was out for about a month with a respiratory problem so he would have more wins and strikeouts etc, which is unbelievable considering where he is at now.

zito? the guy is not at all consistent. a run of good starts, not even dominant ones, does not make him a great pitcher.

1.Clemens
2.Peavy
3.Carpenter

I don't get the obsession with Zito. Okay, I do. A's fans rampant on this board. But one good month does not make him a top pitcher. Pitchers who are as good or better than Zito right now and are more consistent for the future:
Clemens
Pedro
Carpenter
Peavy
Santana
Oswalt
Willis
Buehrly
Halladay
Smoltz
Burnett
Beckett
Zambrano
Pettitte (barely...I'm not sold on his return entirely, but I'm not sold on Zito's either, so here he is)

Also Kerry Wood, but injury makes me leave him off. I have a suspicion that Johnson might pitch another year and come back to decent shape while Zito falls off, again. Schmidt may be back, and will be a better pitcher. Zito is way too unreliable to be called a top 3 pitcher in baseball.

Clemens is now replacing Zito on my list. Pedro needs to be replaced by Peavy on yours;) (he just lost to Chan Ho Park!);

so here is where it matters if we are talking about in general. are we asking "who is the best pitcher in the mlb, talent wise" or "right now" or "stats wise" or all three

RIGHT NOW, Zito is one of the best in the league. 8-0 in his last 8 starts with a 2.32 ERA. He is 10-2 since the beginning of June, and averages a strikeouts per inning, which isn't huge but says something.

title of thread doesn't specify right now, stats, talent.........so any three will do. and zito is hot right now. but i kinda wanted to go overall, as c.bill pointed out.

John Lackey is 5-2 with a 1.06 ERA in that stretch. John Patterson is 3-1 with an ERA of 1.69 AJ Burnett is 7-2 and has a 2.57 ERA. Hell, in the last month Noah Lowry has a 1.99 ERA. In the last month Zito has 27 Ks in 36 innings. Clemens also has 27, but in 2 fewer innings of work (not to mention that his ERA is 1). Patterson has 48 in 42 innings of work. Lowry's got 34 in 31. John Lackey has 39 in 34. Going by right now, John Patterson and John Lackey are the 2 best pitchers in baseball. Zito is having a nice run. That is all. If he keeps it to the end of the season, and can still pitch next season, I'll believe it.

I'll agree about Peavy over Pedro. I don't like Pedro that much anyway and have been expecting him to fall apart all year long.

clemens has been the best pitcher all season. the guy's ERA is amazing, and if the astros would have realized that there is an offensive aspect to baseball in the first half of the season, he would have a crapload more wins then he has right now.
