RULE NO. 11-BASKETBALL INTERFERENCE-GOALTENDING

Section I-A Player Shall Not:
a. Touch the ball or the basket ring when the ball is using the basket ring as its lower base.
EXCEPTION: If a player near his own basket has his hand legally in contact with the ball, it is not a violation if his contact with the ball continues after the ball enters the cylinder, or if, in such action, he touches the basket.
b. Touch the ball when it is above the basket ring and within the imaginary cylinder.
c. For goaltending to occur, the ball, in the judgment of the official, must have a chance to score.
d. During a field goal attempt, touch a ball after it has touched any part of the backboard above ring level, whether the ball is considered on its upward or downward flight.
e. During a field goal attempt, touch a ball after it has touched the backboard below the ring level and while the ball is on its upward flight.
f. Trap the ball against the face of the backboard. (To be a trapped ball, three elements must exist simultaneously. The hand, the ball and the backboard must all occur at the same time. A batted ball against the backboard is not a trapped ball.)
g. Touch any live ball from within the playing area that is on its downward flight with an opportunity to touch the basket ring. This is considered to be a "field goal attempt" or trying for a goal.
h. Touch the ball at any time with a hand which is through the basket ring.
i. Vibrate the rim or backboard so as to cause the ball to make an unnatural bounce.
PENALTY: If the violation is at the opponent's basket, the offended team is awarded two points, if the attempt is from the two point zone and three points if it is from the three point zone. The crediting of the score and subsequent procedure is the same as if the awarded score has resulted from the ball having gone through the basket, except that the official shall hand the ball to a player of the team entitled to the throw-in. If the violation is at a team's own basket, no points can be scored and the ball is awarded to the offended team at the free throw line extended on either sideline. If there is a violation by both teams, play shall be resumed by a jump ball between any two opponents at the center circle.

My email to the NBA:

To: The NBA/David Stern

CC: The referees at the 2/8/05 Kings vs Suns game.

Goatending: An illegal play in which a player deflects a ball that is on the downward path to the basket or that is already on the rim of the basket, carrying the penalty of an automatic score when committed by the defense or nullifying the field goal when committed by the offense.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

A concerned kings fan.

ya know people have said that we gave up the game in other ways by not making FTs missing easy lay ups Techs etc. which is true...but bottomline is we had a chance to take the game into OT and possibly win the game and we didn't get that chance
Exactly! The point is, both teams made mistakes during the game, that's the way the game is. At the end of the game we were close enough to go into OT and have a chance to win it. We were robbed by the refs, and that is not acceptable. End of story.

I don't want to hear "Why we really lost this game is because of missed shots, missed free throws, fouls, de...blahblahblah" You know that sort of stuff happens in every game and it happens in wins and losses. What happened at the end of the game is something totally different and something that immediatly changes the outcome of a game.

meaning what?

id say they were more like scaredy-cats
Meaning that they can't complain becasue the refs call them cry babies and they'll get fined. But the refs need to be held accountable. He went on to say how if he says anything he's going to hear from Stern, but he does't care. He's not a bad guy and he doesn't care if he is fined.

Bad Call!!! No doubt but what lost this game?

6 ft's missed by Webb and Bibby (2 crucial Bibby misses in the 4th)
3 missed layups by miller and Stojakovic (Miller's crucial one in the fourth)
2 Technical Fouls
Countless second chance points
You're right, this game should'nt come down to last shot, but it did,and the refs dont review it .WOW,2 slaps in the face by the NBA.

Eurrrgggh... So aggrivating.

The Kings played hard for 48 minutes, should have gone into extra periods, but a blown call by the refs, that was hardly subjective, cost us the game.

i know if i were a player...everyone in NorCal would be able to hear me complain...i would just flip on my "sista-girrl" switch and it would be over...who cares if they get fined...i think everyone should say what they think...period.

everyone can say what they want about Brad but i loved how he got up in the officials face about that no call...let them no that they made a HUGE mistake

Here is some of what Cat said:

I think we got robbed...Some refs take it to heart, some refs hold grudes. Seeing how good the game was I think we deserve a replay. Should the refs get fined for messing a game up? The top office protects them to the fullest. I think they go unsteamed. its blatant...You don't ask the other refs or go to the table. Great game. Should they get fined for that...we''ll get fined if we say something because they're cry babies....They'll go tell on us fast...thats the cost of the game right there. ...Its terrible...you can't talk to refs, some are too young or too old to talk to.....I think they should get punished also.. they rushing out like someone is going to beat hem up. No one is going to touch you, they're protected like they are in the governemnt....Its pitiful....You shouldn't hold grudges, we don't hold grudes.....That is maybe going to hurt us in the long run....I get knee and the ref is like "I'm sorry" Sorry, I'm limping, might not play on thursday..... Its ridiculous. Its nothing agaisnt them, but you react like how you do to us, that's how it is....You don't hold grudes and close you eyes and ignore calls....If you fouled him, you fouled him., none of this its the end of the game....I don't care.I'm sticking up for my team becasue I think I'm right in this.....Yes. Yes. I did becasue you need to review it....What you got differnt rules for different games. If you are going to call it, call it.

Thanks for the link. It was hard to see if that was goaltending right there though. I need to see a closer shot and replay. Nice play though...Brad was pretty open.
After watching that, it looked clean. However, on ESPN they paused it just before Amare Stoudemire blocked it, and it looked like goaltending. I can't believe the ESPN announcer said it was clean.
