As you all know, it looks like the Monarchs are in the running for Sherri Sam. I think that this is a very good thing. This team needs a little shaking up in the manner of the Kings with Christie for Mobley. In my opinion the core that we have had here for the last three years is growing stale and has had it's run. For two straight years the Monarchs have gotten to the WCF, and have not gotten over the hump. Yolanda Griffith is one year older and she is our Barry Bonds. "The Franchise". If I were Whisnant my core group for next year would be:
PF - T. Smith (with Brunson playing, heavy, heavy minutes)
SF - Sam
C - Griffith
SG - Lawson
PG - Penechiero (although I have been pushing for a scoring point for years. But if Lawson is in the lineup, I can put up with Ticha)
Here are some of the comments of our favorite fans up north in Seattle, home of the 2004 WMNA Champions.
Czechchick writes.......Looks like the first "shoe" has been dropped with free agents. I'm a little surprised Sac.'s going after her. They have so many vets, they have to dump some to stay under cap. So them offering Sheri big money is a little strange.
Cressona writes.......Y'know I don't blame Sheri one bit for wanting to take the more lucrative deal, considering how little these women get paid to begin with. By the same token, I agree with the Storm's stance, given the salary cap and the roster priorities. I'm with CC7. The one party whose thinking I don't quite understand is Sacramento. I would take Tangela Smith or DeMya Walker any day over Sheri.
Scott The Administrator writes......This would be about a nightmare situation that I could think of - one of my favorite players, a player I've wanted on the Storm since I first saw her play, leaving to one of my least favorite teams (and I only have two teams I really can't stand) only to have replaced by DeMya. As for Sheri - I think she had a much better opportunity to negotiate with the Storm for a return next season than some of the other maximum-earning veterans. She had an off year last year but had a much better year than 2 or 3 of our other high priced vets who may be retiring anyway.
As for DeMya, if we do lose Sheri because of money, there is no way we'll be able to afford the Flounder.
Nightmare averted.
