What Bagley's arrival means for the other Kings bigs

This is an important point. Willie will not be able to glide around watching anymore. Skal will have to take off the tuxedo. KK will get meaner.
Bagley has intensity and it may become contagious.

I sure like what I have heard from Marvin. He is going to set his family up in Sacto. That will be his support system. He is incredibly gifted with physical skills. The rest of his game will come right along.

As far as the other Fellas, they best just lace those sneakers up tight and come to work and play:D

If there's one thing you can say about Kosta Koufos its that he's tough as nails and brings it every night. Willie and Skal are the ones who are lacking between the ears.

All this talk about Bagley's rebounding got me thinking about Giles. In their 1 year at college, below are their per40 rebounding stats:

Bagley: 13.1 RPG / 4.7 ORPG / 8.4 DRPG
Giles: 13.7 RPG / 5.6 ORPG / 8.1 DRPG

We're so excited about Bagley averaging double digit rebounds when we could very well have two young bigs who have that type of potential.

Looking at their athletic profile:
  • Both have good strength at their age (230-240 lbs)
  • Both have excellent lateral quickness (Giles was tested with elite SF lateral quickness last year)
  • Both can get up: Bagley with a max vert of 40.5"/max reach of 12'2.5" & Giles with a max vert of 32.5"/max reach of 11'10"
    • Keep in mind that the vertical numbers are from Giles' combine performance meaning they could be higher now after rehabbing for an entire year
    • For comparison sake, Blake Griffin's numbers are: max vert of 35.5"/max reach of 11'8.5"

Bagley really needs to make sure he develops a good/great 3pt shot to make this tandem work long term but it's exciting to think about having two bigs with their athletic profile, motor, and rebounding ability (eliminating 2nd chance points on defense while generating more 2nd chance points on offense).

thanks for the stats.
Griffin to me has a pilot's license.
Bagley has 5 inches more hop, and reach 6 inches higher. He has to be careful not to hit his head on the rim.

So those of you who commented before yesterday, how do you feel now that you've actually seen Bagley with other Kings? To answer the initial question, I think it's pretty simple. What Bagley's arrival says to the other bigs is Put up or shut up.

I hope WCS was watching last night because there's a new kid in town that is definitely gonna put it all out there and not only earn his minutes, but make it pretty clear what hard work is all about.

Things just got a lot more interesting.

WCS has enough motivation this year.$$$!

I think WCS deserves a shot to show what he can do with the new identity the big guys on this team want to have. He has the skill set to absolutely complement our two Rooks on defense around the rim and plays very high above the rim when he wants. Maybe he wants to be part of this “bruise and run” squad I saw last night. We were searching for contact, on both ends. If his mind develops a hunger like these two we just drafted, he could rip the league apart in his role. He was picked top 10, not too 5 due to his lack of that fire. If it ignites, we have 3 legit big men with a large amount of potential on both ends. No reason to get rid of him for fillers yet. If we can get a starting 3 it’s something to consider, but writing off Willie is premature, in my opinion. On a team where he doesn’t have to be our best player/new Cousins, he could thrive. Much like he did at UK...

When was the last time a complacent player has morphed into someone with the temperament of a Giles or Bagley? There may be an example out there, but it's extremely rare. A player can improve his skills much, much, much easier than a player trying to change his hunger, fire, mentality, etc.

Well with the way fouls get called on rookies we will need a couple of bigs as I see our aggressive two new bigs having problems with fouls for a few years.
Now saying that my vote is to keep Kosta and WCS around unless we can sign a better big this year threw a trade or free agency.

I really see us moving a few players to fill that big hole at SF.

I just think both Giles and Bagley puts into stark contrast what we saw from WCS last year. In particular, I saw Giles put his shoulder into Wagner a few times just for the hell of it. I don't think I've seen that from WCS in three years! A lot of times WCS seems to operate with the maxim, "I won't body up on you, so please don't body up on me."

I can see the Kings keeping Kosta. He's tough, strong, doesn't shy away from contact, plays defense within the confines of his ability, and can rebound to start the fast break. I think he would be a good complement to the athleticism of Bagley and Giles. I just don't see it with WCS.

I would keep WCS around this season. See what playing with guys with motors like Giles and Bagley does to him, also a faster pace will play to Willie's strengths. Let him enter restricted free agency next summer and see what his value around the league is. Bigs are struggling to get paid these days and you might be able to keep Willie around as a rotation big at a nice price.

Well what does this do to WCS. All the talk was now Cousins is gone WCS now can show his game. I am still waiting?

This is the argument I make as well.

I'm not sure where you get "fascination" from its not as if kings blogs are littered with Skal threads. He's a King though.
A lot of posters here talk about him like he's demonstrated great skill on the court. I just don't see it. He's even softer than WCS.

I'd much rather dangle him in a trade offer and see if I can get a SF like Oubre in return. No sense in missing out on pieces the team needs so they can try and sign him as a backup center. Backup centers can be had anywhere.

I'm thinking that ship has sailed with them apparently bringing in Dwight Howard. I liked that deal though.

Giles made the comment that he likes to hit guys before he gets hit. These words would never come out of Willie's mouth. There is more of a sincerity to what he says than the eye rolling hyperbole from Willie. At the 2:45 mark he says " We hit first.....Toughness is something I am gonna bring every day, that fight, that grit.....I am never gonna let another man feel like he has the advantage over me. That's never gonna happen."

You aren't getting Kelly Oubre for Willie Cauley Stein my friend. Hate to burst your bubble.

I agree, but would they have considered if we were to take on a less than ideal contract? If we took Manhimi I don't think they hesitate. I'd prefer Smith but I don't think taking that contract is enough incentive.

I think they like Oubre better than Otto Porter so no I don't think they are giving him up.
