Wells' agent, Kings talking
The guard has been taking yoga and Pilates to improve his flexibility.

William Phillips, the agent for free-agent shooting guard Bonzi Wells, said the stance of he and his client has been made clear throughout a number of discussions with the Kings during the past couple of weeks.

"The Kings know where we're at," Phillips said Thursday. "We've been talking. We talked (Wednesday) and we talked (Thursday), and we've talked about all three options. Bonzi signing (with Sacramento), a sign-and-trade or Bonzi going to sign somewhere else. There is not a failure to communicate between the parties."

William Phillips, the agent for free-agent shooting guard Bonzi Wells, said the stance of he and his client has been made clear throughout a number of discussions with the Kings during the past couple of weeks.

Bonzi signing (with Sacramento), a sign-and-trade or Bonzi going to sign somewhere else. There is not a failure to communicate between the parties."

In fact, Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie and Phillips nearly have established a mutual admiration society while addressing the professionalism each has shown during the negotiations. Of course, with no deal yet, both sides conceivably could hate the ground on which each other walks and have the same result at this juncture.

The Kings have been talking with Phillips since July 1, and the agent said: "Several offers and counterproposals have been exchanged."

Phillips wouldn't discuss numbers involved in those offers and counterproposals.

"We've continued to talk and we'll continue to talk," he said. "I wouldn't say we're at an impasse."

Meanwhile, Phillips says Wells has been busy preparing for next season -- wherever it may be. "Bonzi's been taking yoga to increase his flexibility and doing Pilates to strengthen his core," Phillips said of his client, who missed 30 games last season with groin injuries. "Those injuries he had last year, to be honest, made him want to improve his flexibility."

Well I'll tell you what, option 3 isn't happnening. Because the Maloofs and Petrie have brilliantly *just* out bid what everyone can bid for Bonzi with straight up cash. The only two options are Sign and trade where a team can take on more Salary that way, ensuring we get some other pieces we want, or he re-signs.

Or he feels "dissed" and decideds to sign somewhere for the MLE.....highly unlikely to happen since he'll recieve less.

His agent just wants to get him more money and he really has nowhere else to go and he wants to squeeze it out of the Kings but they aren't going to bid against themselves.

Finally, we hear something! It's about time. I'm glad to hear they're still talking at least. I mean, the Kings organization is keeping everyhting really hush-hush this season.

Fingers crossed eh?

I'd love to see Bonzi return. But I hope his hunger and hustle last year was not just a "contract year" type of thing.

I think that Bonzi will end up back with the Kings accepting something between 36-40 million over 5 years.

I'm wondering if he will feel resentment that he did not get a Peja like deal from someone? Also, how does the fact that he may receive a subtandard contract (in his mind) play into his performance and attidude?

What do you all think Bonzi's trade value will be like 2-3 years down the road?

Assuming that Martin will be starting by then..............will Bonzi be fine coming off the bench, or should we look to make a trade?

It depends on the contract length and amount. In three years he could have an expiring contract, which would make him very tradeable.

And of course there's always the off chance that he can somehow manage to keep one foot out of the grave and still be a productive player at the ripe old age of 33/34, and be desired for actual basketball skills. Stranger things have happened.

We need Bonzi if we want to stay competitive. Other than Artest, Bonzi was are only low post presense. I hope Geoff isnt thinking that Miller is gonna become a man and actually score down low like a 7 footer should do......We made a good offer to bonzi and he should know that he will have a major role on our team. Remember before artest Bonzi was the only one on our team who didnt suck.

Don't the Pacers have that 7.5 million exception they can use from the Peja deal on Bonzi (providing they do not get Al Harrington)?
They can't use it to sign him but they can help facilitate a trade. I think once the whole Harrington to Golden State or Indiana deal gets cleared up we will see something.

Good things to read...

Bonzi's a proven starting-caliber player. Has been since his 2nd or 3 rd season in the league. Ditto the playoffs. Yes, his play increased in his contract year, of course it would to a degree, but he also got career-high minutes (as expected), the most minutes since 03-04, and along with us not having quality rebounding big men. Playoffs? The aforementioned, and the Spurs wing players not being able to stop Bonzi.

Um, SAR? This guy is a quality post-player, not just offensively, he's a solid post-defender. Which was a nice surprise. Aside from the jaw injury and the time early on in his recovery-while-playing, he was good for us, and will be better with the improved team for next season.

First, welcome to the board. You're now a member of the most active Kings message board on the Internet.

You might want to check our threads from the past few weeks as there has been a LOT of discussion about Bonzi, his potential for coming off the bench, etc. In fact, it's been one of the most talked about topics since the season ended.

Again, welcome to Kingsfans.com.

Thank you, SAR was a great surprise last year. He was my favorite player until Artest came along - really gave some badly needed energy. It sucked when he hurt his jaw!

Indeed -- one of the reasons I think we should jsut push it to $40 mil (if we have not already) just to smooth out any bruised feelings.

That said, who knows where Bonzi is in all this. His agent has been running aorund posing and preening and generally needing to be popped in the nose for weeks now. Bonzi may have just given him carte blanche to try too find the best deal and be off on vacation somewhere.

For this thing to take this long the numbers have to be farther off than assumed. If was the difference between 2-3 million then there is no way this would take so long.

And Shareef is our best low post player. He is better than Artest and Bonzi.

I'd say those 3 are probably some of the best in the low post at their respective positions. But if I had to give the ball to one of those guys and say "get us some points" I'd choose Reef.

I just hope this crap is over with soon so Petrie can start making other moves.

I'd go with Bonzi, for the simple reason that his post skills as a guard are nearly unique and the guys who are guarding him just aren't used to it, while Reef, superior post player that he is, is nonetheless matched against guys who defend the post all the time. I.E. Bonzi's post edge over Manu is greater than Reef's post edge over Duncan.

I think 40 million over 5 is fair for Bonzi. At the most.
I agree. Even that may be asking too much from the Kings because the reality is, they DO have to look down the road. They may be especially cautious after basically giving up Webber for nothing because of his horrible contract. Still if it were me, I wouldn't mind paying Bonzi that much.

But that isn't really far off of the 5 year 36 million dollar deal the Kings reportedly offered. I think he may be asking for 45-50 million. I hope I am wrong because I don''t see the Kings paying him that. Of course, I don't see any other team paying him that either! Should be interesting how this turns out.

I don't think he's terribly excited to be in a Kings uniform anymore. Obviously, the Kings proposition is more or less market value, and if he wanted to be here he would have signed. I think, considering that the money will be virtually the same where ever he goes, that both he AND the Kings are shopping for a S&T. Hence, all the mutual talk of "professionalism".
