Web Hosting

I was looking to get an account to host a couple of sites. One for personal use that isn't going to demand much bandwith, and another for professional use for a relative that probably won't get more than a couple hundred hits a month. No flash, or any complicated server technology, just HTML or XHTML and few .jpgs.

Can anyone recommend a reliable web hosting company that isn't ridiculously expensive that offers packages like I am looking for?

Look up at the Google ad. It says web hosting starting at $3.95. Click on the link. ;)

I appreciate your offer, but I was hoping to get advice on the grassroots level, if you catch my drift. I mean, I understand you want to put more money back into the site, but the hosting I'm looking for is for professional reasons. I can't make the decision based on a referral ad.

But thank you anyway!!! :D

It's hard to recommend without knowing what your idea is of "ridiculously expensive". That can mean a very different thing from one person to the next. Most of my sites are hosted at webhost4life.com, because they seem to give me the most bang for the buck (ranging anywhere between $5-$20 per month - but I think they require you to pay annually). From what you describe... you could easily get away with the cheapest package they offer.

I've use other hosts as needs arise... but the one I mentioned seems to do the trick for the vast majority of my needs. Good control panel, good tech support if any problems arise... overall a pretty well rounded host.

Cool, I'll check em out, thx. Sounds good except for the "annual" part. I get nervous when hosts aren't comfortable offering month-to-month accounts. Gives me the impression that they aren't reliable enough to retain their customers.

But from what you describe, they sound like they are reliable. Thanks for the help. If anyone else has any other good experience from other hosts, I'd love to be able to shop around.

I catch your drift. But you can still click on the link... ;)

Seriously, however, you might want to check with CoastalWebOnline. They're a Sacramento-based company and I deal with them at work a lot. I do believe they have web-hosting. You can check them out at www.cwo.com.

As far as reliablity is concerned... I'd give them maybe a 7 or 8 out of 10. But that's not a bad rating for a host in that price-range. I host predominantly community based sites (local news, project logs, political discussion, etc), and most are asp/asp.net driven sites bound to sql server, access & XML data sources. My point being... there's a lot of code behind my sites, and the webhost has been consistently up to the job. I did however have a problem with one site slowing down too much about 6-9 months ago, but I put in a request to move it to another server... and it was done within an hour - but I had to shave the grade for that one just the same. ;)

I also use Pacific Online. They're a bit more expensive, but their servers (and their techs) are rock solid. I used Maximum ASP for awhile... and although they're the best I've ever used in probably every conceivable way -- they're just too darned expensive these days for the type of things I do.

Edit: My grade was in reference to webhost4life, not VF’s link. I just realized there could be some confusion there.
