Veteran coach Don Nelson, who has the Golden State Warriors on a 52-win pace in the cutthroat Western Conference, has been formally invited to return to the Warriors' bench next season.

The Warriors announced Tuesday afternoon that they have exercised their option for next season on Nelson's contract, well before the June deadline on that option and without knowing for certain that they'll be in the playoffs for a second successive season.
It's now up to Nelson, who turns 68 in May, to decide whether he wants to keep going at season's end or whether he'd rather walk away as the second-winningest coach in league history. Nelson's lifetime total of 1,271 regular-season wins trails only Lenny Wilkens (1,332) on the NBA's all-time list.
