What's it called when like after a joke punchline, the drummer from the band hits the drums... That like ba du CHHHH... I always thought it was called a rimshot, but apparently it's not. Does anyone know what it is?

I'm not sure I'd classify this is a Very Important Question PLEASE Help, but to each his own:).
Hey, QF, there could be money riding on it. That would make it very important to me. ;) :p

People call that a rimshot, but technically a rimshot is simply hitting a snare drum on just the rim. You're probably both right.

Rimshot has two separate meanings:

1) In the sport of basketball when a shot does not go in cleanly but rolls around the rim of the basket before going in. (antonym of "hits the net" or "nothing but net")
2) The double hitting of a snare drum followed by a cymbal, sometimes referred to by it onomatopoeia "da da chhh." This is an old technique used by comedians to add punch or signify the end of the punch line for their joke.

:D :D

I think you're both right. In my mind, a rimshot refers to litterally hitting the rim of the snare drum with the stick. Still, it's possible that the badum-cha thing is referred to as a "rimshot," simply a different application of the word.
