US Open

Tennis time again, US Open starts tomorrow and thanks to USA channel, we get hours of coverage. I'm 1:1 so far in Slams this year so going for winning record. Roddick won the US Open series and I'm picking him to win again this year. I know Federer is playing well, as usual and so is Nadal who I'd love to see win to prove all the people wrong who say he can't play on hard courts. However this is the US and I think Andy will go all out, he has serious score to settle with Federer after Wimbledon. I'd also like to see Agassi do well, this might be his last Open but we've said that before.
On the ladies, Sharapova is the favorite but I don't think she'll win. I'm rooting for US ladies, Lindsay, Venus, Serena.
Any comments, predictions from our tennis fans here?

I cant believe Roddick just lost in teh first round... THIS is UNBELIEVABLE. I AM SO SAD right now...

I know, I'm in shock!:eek: That was good match though, Muller played his a** off and Andy could just not come up with any answers. Not a very happy birthday for him this year.
Hopefully Ginepri can help avenge it a little in round 2, ironically they're doubles partners.

Roddick seems to be good at getting tossed in the first round of Majors.....

<sighs>
That only happened three times prior this US Open.

US Open '00, when he was still a junior;
Roland Garros '02 and '03, because he sucks on clay.

Federer and Nadal are the favourites, the rest is just way behind (the fact that both won all of the seven masters so far played, is proof enough). Federer can pretty much only be beaten by Safin and Nadal, with Safin out, it's just Nadal.

Both could very well beat last year's year end point record -- which was already a huge accomplishment by Federer.

Personally, I would like to see Federer defend his Wimbledon AND US Open titles in consecutive years, something Pete was never able to do (despite 7 Wimbledons and 5 US Opens).

Nadal-Blake is going to be rather interesting. I think Blake has a good chance here, even though I don't quite envision him to be a dangerous giant-killer (he's the type of player that beats the ones he's supposed to, namely the lower ranked ones, and loses to the ones who have a higher ranking).

If he does win, then great for him. After all the ugly ordeals he has gone through (father passing away, breaking his neck and having his whole future endangered), I'm certainly happy for him to go through better times. He's such a classy bloke, after all.

I wish Blake well also but not against Nadal, I want him to win it all but it looks like great match. The Nadal-Jenkins match was great, so much energy.
Williams play each other again, I'm sure Venus will win that one.

Dont fret about which of the sisters will come through Loopy, Sharapova will sort either one out....::looks through video collection to remind himself of wimby final::

Hewitt still there too..:cant find any vids of him..nevermind ;)

^^ wow, watching Nadal vs Blake.

Blake is brutal. Literally slam-dunking the winners at the net. Awesome power.

Doesnt look good for Raf at this point....

Ooh I just discovered this thread. :D

I woke up at 1am here just to catch the James-Rafa match and it was a really good one, I think. James played so well and although I am a Blake fan, I feel kinda sad for Nadal. But for sure, he'll still get a ton of chances in the coming years.

I am happy for Blake. I like Nadal and was looking forward to a rematch between him and Federer. However, it is time for Blake to have a good showing. I have always felt like he was overlooked a lot. Good for him!!

request please: if you're going to post results please put spoiler so those of us that might tape it and watch it later can do so without knowing the outcome.
Thank you.:)
no more predictions from me in this tournament, it's appearing that's the kiss of death. Nice job by Blake, shame it was at the hands of Raf:(. Also nice to see Ginepri finally playing well. I always said he had potential and he's finally living up to it. Should make the Davies Cup much more competitive for the US.

I've been glued to the TV all day.

If you're taping today's games, you're going to see some FANTASTIC tennis, loopy. I won't spoil the suspense and talk about any of today's matches, but I will comment that I'm very, very glad to see James Blake having the tournament of his life.

All I can say is WOW.... that was a good match... for those who don't know which one it was:

Sanguinetti VS. Srichiphan

(AT LEAST LEAVE THIER NAMES, VF- you took out everything- i thought u only wanted to remove the scores. That's fine.. but leave the names)

that was such an exciting match- not like a few yrs ago when Sampras beat Courier despite vomiting, but still- both players played their guts out...

Roger Federer will play Kiefer next. Kiefer was the only one who took a set off Federer at Wimbledon, and for some reason he usually gives Federer the fits. I can't really say why, Kiefer is a modestly talented player at best.

He will probably face Nalbandian next, and personally, I would rather not see them play. Federer has stated that he's beaten anybody by now, but as most of you know, Nalbandian used to be Federer's arch enemy, having beaten him several times. I do think Federer has become a completely different player, but this matchup still has an unsettling feel about it. The fact that they've only played once or twice since Federer became dominant, doesn't help much either.

Even though there's still alot of tennis to be played, it looks like Federer-Agassi could be the final. Agassi will kick himself if he doesn't make it, as the draw has opened up considerably. It should make for a great storybook ending, as even Gil Reyes has admitted this US Open might be his last. Though it will be rather tough for him to beat Federer (or rather: he will lose that).
