Tunguska Blast

Anyone every hear of this? 99 years ago today (6/30/1908), a meteorite exploded in the atmosphere over Siberian forest/tundra, leveling 40-80,000 trees and leaving a 30-mile blast radius. It was a low-density meteorite that wasn't hard enough to actually hit the surface, but if it did, it would have been a cataclysm. Even if it exploded over a populated area, blammo.

Scary to think about this happening in modern times, no? Governments actually keep tabs on large space bodies that could buzz or hit Earth. I saw a program where astronomers place 1/300 odds of a giant asteroid hitting Earth in about 900 years -- big enough to rival the one that killed the dinos. Better them than us, know what I mean?
