Top Chef

New from BRAVO, home of Project Runway, has a new reality elimination series, Top Chef.

It takes place at a culinary school in San Francisco. You think designers are bitchy? You ain't seen nothing yet. This could get ugly. I envision people spiking other people's recipes with tasty little bugs, or possibly ingredients that aren't exactly digestible, etc.

The first week one chef hopeful had a key ingredient turn up missing.

Hey, this is good TV.

;)

This show is intriguing. I've now seen two episodes, with the third premiering tomorrow. I'll catch it later in the week.

This last time the hopefuls had to cook monkfish for kids at the local boys/girls club center. It was hilarious. I have to wonder if these people were ever kids. Some of the stuff they came up with was ghastly.

This week's challenge is even more interesting. They are each given $20 and allowed one half hour to shop ... at a AM/PM mini-mart. Can't wait to see the culinary masterpieces made from Twinkies, soda and potato chips.

;)

One question about this show-is it more about cooking, or is it more about the contestants bickering with one another? I would be interested in watching it if it was mainly about the cooking and what they have to go through in that area. But I wouldn't watch it if it was just showing all the contestants cat-fighting and whining with each other.

I'd say it's 60-40, with the edge to the cooking. It is competition and reality TV, however, so be forewarned that there is BICKERING and back-stabbing and one guy you hope is skewered on his own utensils.

They're pretty curt with their dismissals, too.

"Pack up your knives and leave."

i can't believe they brought that girl andrea back. she was clearly not doing a good job when she was there.

i can't stand that blonde guy. he;s such a pompous ***. knowing my luck that *** will probably win.... i sure hope not!

The ONLY good thing about Andrea is that she drives Steve - the pompous *** - nuts. He cannot stand her.

:D

so does candice, they hate each other. i loved their little fight last week " obviously you are a tool and a ****** bag" CLASSIC

Ah, ratz. I just saw yesterday's episode. I would NOT have sent Candace home. After what the judges had to say about Stephen's attitude, I was really surprised to see them let him stay.

I'm getting a little tired of all the gimmick stuff. I would like to see them give the remaining chefs some real challenges - not stupid trick stuff. How about giving them some black bass and seeing what they can do with it? I'd rather see something more on the line of Food Challenge.

The previews for next week show them using hot dog carts...

i loved how stephan got called to the table in the worst 3 at the end. he just could not believe it. i can't wait until his cocky and pampous *** gets kicked out. it'll be AWESOME

i can't stand that ***** tiffani. i just hate her. i want her GONE!

i hope lee ann wins. she's cool! i also like harold for some reason. his soup looked to DIE for in the microwave challenge

I have to admit I liked the purple cauliflower and stuff David did, too...

I'm actually rooting for someone to get violently ill after swallowing a portion of anything Stephen has cooked. That would be priceless...

;)

I don't know about everyone else, but Tiffany is really starting to bug me... She's getting more annoying the more I watch.. I know she's a good chef and all.. but wow.....

i HATE tiffany. she is such a *****. she also has a pee poor attitude about being a chef as she howed a few episodes ago when she got all hissy about making food for children. as a cook in the culinary industry, i will make whatever anyone wants. you want top ramen and canned cream of mushroom soup? you got it. i do whatever i can to make people happy. that is what this industry is about. it's not about having a big ego and being snotty. it sounds like dave complains about her next week, i can't wait

i'm glad andrea got the boot. i never liked her coming back. i think it's really unfair when someone who gets kicked out gets a chance to come back and makes it further then someone who never got kicked out in the first place. very very frustrating.

stephan is starting to grow on my slightly. he's still a jerk, but he's such a good chef, i wouldn't mind seeing him win. he's got a great understanding of exotic ingredients, great wine knowledge, very artistic and creative plating. he's got the whole package food wise. i hope leann wins, i like her.

I'm thinking Miguel is gonna be the next to depart.

Stephan/Stephen/whatever is just snooty enough to be a chef in some foo-foo restaurant that caters to the rich and shallow, IMHO.

I'm looking forward to the next couple of challenges. I actually believe tempers are right at the edge. Sooner or later, food is gonna fly...

;)

Yeah- i'm kind of excited to see Dave blow up on Tiffany... thats going to be entertaining!... I don't know.. I'm kind of thinking Dave is going to leave next..

As for Stephen.. I don't like his condescending attitude either.. but I have to say.. through much of the contests, he's getting by on presentation. His food presentations are really good- which kills me!!

Well, I guess we'll wait until then to see who goes!!

I guess I've been a little too caught up in the playoffs. I just finished catching up on the episodes...

I was next about one thing. Miquel did leave next.

;)

After the commitment ceremony fiasco, I couldn't believe Stephen's attitude. That guy is gonna end up with a fileting knife between his shoulder blades at some point in his "career."

Last week he was busy being a sommelier. This week AGAIN he's acting like a waiter. But FINALLY the judges tell Stephen to "pack your knives and go."

YES!!!

anyone watch the latest episode? i hadn't been following but caught the most recent one, the assisting chefs were especially cruel to the red head. did the guy really deserve to win?

Did Harold deserve to win? Argueable.

Tiffani was annoying as crap. She pretty much alienated every other contestant over the course of the show. BUT her menus were more challenging and she took more risks. On the other hand, she also took credit for Dave's desserts which I think was pretty tacky.

All in all, I think Harold will have the more successful career. Even the people he beat wanted to work with him.

Tiffani had the perfect person on her team in Stephen but she didn't use his expertise. She just didn't get it.

So, yes...the right guy won.

it was actually pretty interesting. anybody watch the show "made to order" its pretty interesting also. as a judge i may have voted for tiffani, since she is willing to take risks, a sign of originality and creativity, two things that could make a good chef great (and her meat dish looked stunning). if this show returns, i may follow closer next time around.

She may have been willing to take risks, but there were a couple of problems. She didn't take advantage of Stephen's vast knowledge of wine pairings. She took credit for Dave's desserts. Those two things probably weighed pretty heavy against her. A top chef has to be able to command the respect of the people that work with him/her. She had alienated everyone. That isn't going to serve her well in real life.

i completely agree that the industry she chose requires team work for true success. i also agree that it rubbed me the wrong way she took credit for the desserts, which everyone appeared to love. she obviously has to work on some character issues but one of the judges said her meat dish could have been served at ANY top resturaunt in the WORLD. she is a talented chef. i also found her annoying and only saw the one episode. that being said, with her youth and innovative thinking i cant help but feel she could be very, very successful so long as she gets a reality check and becomes a better team mate, true leader.

I was watching that day and I pretty much went through every single episode until the finale. Right when it was time for the finale I had basketball practice, and by the time I got home it had been over for quite a while. I couldn't tape it at the time either. I was soo MAD!!!

Since I missed it, could anyone give a quick recap on the last show?

It will be replayed at least five times on Bravo in the next week alone. ;)

Long story short?

Harold and Tiffani were surprised to find out that Miguel, Dave, Leanne and Stephen would be their assistants.

Each one of them was asked who they would like to work with. Miguel, Leanne and Stephen said Harold. Dave said Tiffani, but only because he knew there would be two for each chef. Harold was then asked who he would choose. He picked Miguel and Leanne, leaving Stephen to go with Tiffani.

Each chef had to prepare a 5-course meal for top culinary experts and match them with wines from Lorraine Bracco's private winery.

Tiffani was her usual bossy self. Dave, in one of the most generous acts I've seen, offered her HIS dessert specialty that he was planning to use himself if he'd gotten to the finals. Of course, she said yes. She opted to make two variations of dishes for each course.

Harold was more traditional. He prepared ONE menu, wrote it out and it was waiting at the seats of the judges. Tiffani, on the other hand, came out and introduced each dish which actually became a bit of a pain. She spent too much time talking and the food got cold.

Harold's team truly worked together. They complemented each other and Harold made sure to give them credit.

Tiffani, on the other hand, sniped at Dave and Stephen. Even so, they both worked very hard for her. The deciding point may have come after the fact, when the assistants were asked first to meet with the judges. When they did, Tom asked Dave if he had done the dessert by himself. He said yes, that it was his conception, etc. Tom already knew that apparently. The judges asked and all four assistants said they would give the title to Harold.

When the judges asked Tiffani about her menu and especially her dessert, she didn't say it was Dave's dish. When specifically asked about it, she lied. She said that she and Dave had talked it over extensively, when - in fact - nothing of the sort had happened.

Bottom line? Harold wins and Tiffani goes off crying about how chefs have to take chances, nobody understands her, etc. You know, a typical Tiffani response to anything that doesn't go her way.

Damn...I missed it. I thought Tiffani should have been eliminated instead of Dave, but in the tradition of Bravo "reality" shows, they had to have a good guy/ bad guy scenario. (ala Project Runway's Santino). I'm just glad that Harold won.

( If you check the fine print blurb on screen at the end of the shows..for about 3 seconds..it says that the producers have a say in the outcome, so it's not just the "judges".)

Thanks alot VF, sounds exciting. I am very happy for Harold though, he was my choice to win when it came down to the final 3.

I'll be sure to catch one of the replays sometime!

BOO YAH!!!! i really liked harold so i was glad he won

tiffany was getting hate from everyone! the fans voted during the show on a text poll of who should win: it was 93% harold 7% tiffany. embarassing! all 4 of the returning chefs chose harold to win.

i did think her menu was intresting and i did like the idea. however, if you are pairing wine and food, artichokes are one of the hardest things to pair, i would have done something else. hell i even knew they didn't pair well together and i'm not super knowledgeable about wine pairings.

i'm really glad harold won becuase i hated tiffany. she is a ***** with a capital B. well thats how she appeared on the show. i work in a kitchen, and you have to respect the people you work with. she didn't appear to. taking credit for someone else's idea and work is pretty tacky. i think harold will use the money for a much better thing: he's actually going to open his own resturant and share his talents with the world. tiffany wanted to travel the world and pay off her debts. um, ok. thats cute and all, but if you win money on a cooking show, it might be a good idea to use that money to give back IMO.

congrats harold. i hope his resturant kicks butt. i'll viisit it next time i go to NYC if in pans out

i hope there is a 2nd season of top chef! that show is awesome!

Did you hear Harold at the end? He actually said he'd be getting in touch with a couple of his friends from the show to help him in his restaurant. I'm thinking LeeAnn will probably be going to New York.

:)

:)

she already lives there

and personally i'd be shocked if she worked at his resturant. she's the executive chef at the french culinary institute. i would be shocked to see her give up that kind of job for a job in a new resturant. very risky financially.
