The Timberwolves have a "major announcement" (their words) coming around 4:30pm ET. InsideHoops.com will report what happens. insidehoops.com

Must be about Flip, either he got fired or his steping down.

The Timberwolves said Saturday they will make a "major announcement" at 3:30 p.m. today, where it is expected the team will announce that head coach Flip Saunders has been fired.

Saunders has coached the team, which advanced all the way to the Western Conference finals last year, since 1995. While most of the team returned for a run at a championship this year, it has struggled so far and after Friday night's loss to the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City, and has a losing record at 25-26.

Saunders was not coaching the team at its early afternoon practice Saturday. Instead, the practice session was run by Vice President for Basketball Operations Kevin McHale, and Randy Whitman, an assistant coach. It is expected that McHale, Saunder's college buddy, will be the replacement

Long shot thought Flip being replaced by PJ... They do have tallent in need of direction (his forte). Hope McHale does not think he (Mc Hale) is the right guy to shape up these knuckelheads.

Interesting. They must not have any takers for Cassell or Spree.

I will never forgive Flip for when the Kings were up by a decent amount in the last minute of a game several years ago and Flip still had them fouling intentially. Hedo almost got hurt.

Oh well, the franchise needed a shakeup, I guess even the immortal KG cannot save everything with his leadership.

I don't like Flip for that useless and dangerous fouling that hurt Hedo, but as a coach he has always looked like a good coach to me. The problem wasn't him, it was Cassell And Sprewell.

Whoever mentioned the Phil Jackson possibility may be onto something. That's again just the type of situation he would like to step into, especially if he could engineer a trade for a second quality player (Cassell and Wally for someone, etc.).

thats too bad...Flip was a great coach...one of the longest tenures in the NBA

::sigh:: i can't believe they gave up on him...i really thought they were gonna get rid of a player or two first and then step back and revaluate....thats too bad

was he fired or did he resign?

prolly should go back and read the whole thread...maybe i can answer my own question

flip was re-positioned (not in the bob knight kind of way), he hasn't been fired, he's some kind of consultant with the wolves now.

kevin mchale, flip's college teammate at minnesota and current gm of the t-wolves, will coach the team for the foreseeable future.

Kevin McHale is a little more than just Flip's college teammate at Minnesota and current GM of the TWolves.

I believe he once did okay in a Celtics uniform.

i don't see how firing a coach who has taken them to 8 straight playoffs appearances with a continually changing roster is going to save this team this year.

spree needs to go find food to feed his family elsewhere...

I was at the game and for once I was sitting in some great seats right next to the bench.........Flip pretty much turned around and "flipped" us the bird because we were giving him so much crap.

Flip has been given an unbeleivably long leash forever up there -- no other coach could lose 6 straight first round series and still get accused of being a genius. But 1 year after the breakthrough year this was SO obviously a case of all of the cancers who MCHALE imported destroying the team that firing Flip is ridiculous. He was vastly overrated, and now he's a fall guy for trhe worst grouop of characters in the NBA.

This business up in Minnesota is just further proof that the Petrie-Adelman signing and coaching philosophy can pay dividends even without winning the Title. Petrie would have never traded for Spreewell or Cassell. Adelman would never tollerate their attitudes. Go Kings management.

Maybe McHale realized he was over his head as a GM and if the coaching thing works out plnas to step down?
