It has been quite the past few months for Monarchs guard Ticha Penicheiro who never really gets a break between her WNBA and overseas seasons. However, back in Portugal for just a few days before leaving for Russia to play for Spartak Moscow, the WNBA champion received the 'Medalha de Honra ao Merito Desportivo' (medal honoring outstanding sporting achievement) in her native land.
She was honored by Laurentino Dias, minister of sports, in her home town Figueira da Foz. The ceremony was at the Ginasio Clube Figueirense, the team where Ticha started playing basketball as a six year old, coached by her father.

"I am honored to receive this award and proud of my club, Figueirense, and my country Portugal and am pleased to elevate the name of my country and town all over the world," Ticha said with tears in her eyes. During the ceremony, Ticha presented a Monarchs jersey to Laurentino Dias.
