The Maloofs new arena?

#1
I just got done reading an article in the bee that said the Maloofs built a 500 million dollar arena at the Palms in Vegas. Is it true?

I don't know how much it was, but they do have an arena in the Palms. They just held a UFC event there in June. It looked pretty nice.

There were two articles in the Bee which pertained to the Maloofs and the Ultimate Fighting Championships. I just posted both of them in the "General" forum. I'm checking to see if the $$$ amount for the Pearl Arena is correct or if it includes the other renovations they recently completed at the Palms.

ya, it didn't look too big to me, but it did look pretty nice. It's not a full arena like they have at say Mandalay Bay or the MGM.

The Palms new arena does look pretty nice but its definitely an intimate venue, mainly to compete with the type of gigs the Hard Rock can book. I don't think the NBA would ever allow a team to actually move to a casino when they did decide to allow a team in Vegas but I don't think they'd have to worry - even the MGM arena is Arco sized and that's for ring events, it would lose 500-1000 seats for hoops. And Mandalay is around 12k. Thomas and Mack is the only current option and they already have a college team playing games there.

Yes, but the city of Las Vegas just received 6 proposals from developers to replace the Thomas and Mack Center, which is really old.

It isn't an arena, per se. That's the mistake (one of the mistakes, anyway) Gutierrez made in her article that a competent editor would have caught. It's primarily a concert theater that seats 2,500 and is being adapted for use for UFC. It's still going to be used primarily for casino shows, as the article in the General forum seems to indicate.

This just seems like a shameless attempt to mar the reputations of the Maloofs more than anything. The Maloofs for all intents and purposes are still business men at the end of the day. They do what's best for their business...the FREE MARKET...the way things ought to always be. But what this journalist is trying to do is pull on the heart strings of Sacramentans saying...look here, the Maloofs can pony up the money for an arena in Vegas, but they can't do it Sacramento.

The act of the matter is, a new arena is Sacramento benefits the community probably AS MUCH if not more than the Maloofs. I do think the Maloofs should fund half the amount of a new arena and the community the other half. But that's just my opinion. The problem I have with the article is the fact the author is attempting to give the Maloofs an unjustly black eye through a smear tactic of misinformation. That bothers me.

This is what some of us have been saying about the Bee for a long, long time. Unfortunately, they're the only game in town as far as major newspapers are concerned, so they pretty much get to say whatever they choose. And a lot of people just buy into it without questioning the validity.

In this case, I suspect Gutierrez may simply have made an honest mistake as she has written numerous articles about the "$500 million" deal to replace Arco. It might just have been a mental lapse - but one they certainly should have caught before the Bee went to press.

Any new arena built in Sacramento will be built with 100% private money, or none at all...thats the resounding message sent to anyone associated with sports in this fine city of ours. Gotta keep those 'money hungry, greedy Maloofs Bros.' on their toes, I guess. I wonder if R.E. Graswich plans on a mayoral run at any time, and if his platform will be primarily built on his anti-Maloof sentiments. The Bee is a GREAT source of fair and balanced news and information!:D

Did you know R.E. Graswich is now doing the afternoon drive with Kitty O'Neil on KFBK? It's enough to ruin a perfectly good day...

And he's doing "The Scoop" news segments for Channel 13 (KOVR) news at 6 p.m. AND he's blogging and writing a column for Sacramento Magazine. The man has reinvented himself as the King of All Media. Love him or hate him, the lad is definitely talented.

Talented? Perhaps but since this is a family-oriented site I'm not going to hypothesize what I suspect his biggest talent might be.
