Even thou the Kings have had a tough year I believe some good has come out of it. It's been halfway thru the season and I have been very excited about the future of this franchise.
First of all we have 2 youngsters in Martin and Garcia who have proved they can play at a high level. If by chance Peja and Bonzi leave I think that these two players could step up and take over next year. I believe we have a young Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince in the making. They are good defensive players and they have only been in the NBA for 1 or 2 years, respectively. They both can shoot from long range and also take it to the basket. Martin has shown he can move with out the ball and is very athletic. Garcia has good court vision and is able to find open players.
Second, Bibby and Miller are IMO in the top 5 at there respected positions. They both are locked up for years to come and are hungry for a ring. However there defensive game has at times been detramental to the team, but l'll touch on that in a bit. They both can spread the floor and hit there outside shots. In fact I would like to see Miller step out to the 3 point line more often.
Next thing is Ronnie Price. Yes, I said Ronnie Price. In the limited time he has played he has shown he belongs in this league. He can shoot well and plays defense the full length of the court. He is quick and extremely athletic. By next year I think he'll be our back-up point gaurd. He may be our next Bobby Jackson. He can come in for defensive purposes when Bibby is letting his man get by him time and time again.
Another thing is our Power Forward spot. We have Shareef and Thomas battling for the starting spot at that position. Both have there pluses and minuses but both compete night in and night out. On any other team you would want those type of players playing for you but I don't think the Kings can win the big one with either one of those player in the starting spot. With the defensive liabilities of Miller, I think we need something more at this position.
Next we have Skinner and Corliss. I think Skinner is more valuable because of his defensive presence in the paint. I have noticed he has improved on offense with his half hook and mid range shot. The question is, Is he the the defense presence we have been asking for? Do we have the offensive weapons to compensate? Corliss is a solid player that brings us the toughness and the leadership we've needed. The only problem is it doesn't help us unless he plays. That is up to the coach to make it work.
Lastly, we are going to need a coach to make of this work. I don't think Adelman is going to be here after this year. With the combination of the Phil Jackson incedent and the many other teams that will be willing to pay much more money for a great coach, I don't see him being on the Kings sideline next year. So the question is....Who is going to put it together next year? I think the situation is going to be simalar to what Detroit went thru except opposite. We are going to have the Offensive weapons but need the defensive mentality of a proven coach.
We'll all just have to pray Petrie makes the right moves to piece this up and coming together.
Go Kings!
