Terrible Kings trades proposed by the internet super thread 2024/2025 edition

This is the sort of package you need 4 unprotected FRP and 3 pick swaps coming back our way. Not a single guy you're really all that excited about long-term. Jaquez is good, but he's not a foundational piece by any means.

Even then, for a Fox just heading into his prime? I want some sort of young foundational piece AND a warchest of FRP. Not just some knock-off/okay-ish prospects.

I do not want to trade Fox. At all. But if self-interested speculation by other franchises turns into rumor turns into "actually gotta get something before he walks", any Fox package that doesn't bring back another All-Star level guy (think Hali/Sabonis) or include at least three unprotected picks is just a non-starter.

If we trade Fox he will likely be the one deciding where he is traded and it will be Clutch pushing the buttons. The only way he asks to get traded to Miami is to play with Bam so to me that is out of the question. Just not that many fits around the league as far as team and Fox needs/wants are concerned.

A hypothetical trade needs to have 3 components:

1) Fox has to want to go there/ team on verge of being a contender or could be
2) team has a need for a scoring point guard
3) team has young player/ draft capital to trade

To me the list is shorter than you think. I came up with Houston, Orlando and San Antonio. I considered other teams like Minnesota but I don’t think the ownership has the cash and not sure they have the right mix of assets. Lots of other teams would be interested but don’t think there is a match among them.

Houston has Cam Whitmore, Jabari Smith and Tari Eason plus a ton of high value draft picks.

Orlando isn’t giving up Big Italia or the German so that means Suggs, Anthony Black Isaac and picks for assets

San Antonio has Sochan, Castle and a boat load of picks.

Some combination of the picks/ players from those three teams.

My guess is Clutch would be happy with any of those three for different reasons. Houston is home and ready to contend now, Orlando has the tax thing and is a warm weather “low key city” that fits Fox. Also ready to contend. And the Spurs thing is obvious with the 9 footer playing over there.

The Kings don’t want any of this to happen but there is a really good package to be had if Clutch forces their hand.

All of these are bad trades. Why would the Kings want to do this?
If Fox gets traded it will be because he asks for it. If he says he isn’t signing an extension he will get traded to the team of his choice just like most franchise level players. You aren’t getting a franchise player in return for him so it’s going to be young players and picks. Which teams that would want Fox will be willing offer more?

I think it's dumb to even entertaining trading Fox unless he wants out. BUT if we were to throw out some hypotheticals, here are some random deals that could probably work ok for both sides:

Magic:
  • Suggs, TDS, Cole Anthony, and Houstan.
  • This would be an ok trade for Fox straight up. Suggs would be able to slot in at PG/SG next to Monk. His off-ball ability allows the offense to run smoother through Monk, Sabonis, and DeMar.
Lakers:
  • Reaves, Hachimura, and Knecht.
  • We get 3 starter-level players with multi-year contract lengths.
In reality, we would probably only get 1 young and promising player with 2 1st round picks? Fox is only on a 2-yr deal and he's going to command a lot of money for someone who's very hot and cold when it comes to playing consistently at an all-star level.

it’s hard to know what his value would be in this hypothetical but 2 way guards in their prime who can score 60 should have pretty great value. Plus the Kings would have some leverage because it’s hard to have 50 plus million in cap space, you more often than not are going to need to acquire that player via trade. Additionally, in their prime franchise players almost never become available. The only other franchise types who could pop up are Jimmy (old) Embiid ( getting older for a big and bad knees) LeBron ( nearly retired) Zion (very bad health) Durant (old and injuries) and maybe Paul George (older and injuries). It’s possible and probably likely that most of those just mentioned won’t be on the move. If Fox requests a trade he might be the best player available in the league that isn’t old or has a long injury history.

as you said it’s just talk and I really hope we aren’t having this conversation this offseason

With Fox, his inconsistencies are maddening for me. He doesn't always play with a gear that everyone knows that he's capable of. He scored 60pts one game, but he's only averaging 21.2ppg in his last 5. Combine any 5 consecutive games for SGA, Luka, or Tatum this year, and you don't see that. And not to mention that we are 12th in the West with a relatively easy schedule.

Franchise players or players of Fox's level actually become available more frequently than you're probably recalling. There are a good amount of stars that have requested out in the last several years. Some that come to mind are:
  • Kyrie - 1 season removed from winning the finals with the Cavs and he was unhappy for whatever reason
  • AD - can't blame him, the Pelicans sucked
  • Kawhi - weird circumstances, but he only suffered 1 major injury at that point with no chronic issues yet
  • Butler - he requested out with Minny and was probably seen as the same caliber of player as current Fox? but he was older and toxic

Some other big named players who were traded without trade requests:
  • Donovan Mitchell - elite player who was traded at the start of his prime
  • PG13 - he was traded out of Indiana, can't remember if he was requesting a trade, but I think him and Fox are kinda similar caliber players (very good, but never superstar great). But PG was better and had the playoff edge
  • KAT - very wild trade by Minny.
We have a good idea of what those players went for. The teams that would have interest in him could be: Denver, GS, Lakers, T-Wolves, Heat, Magic, and Rockets. But realistically, I don't think the T-Wolves can afford him if they weren't willing to afford KAT. GS probably isn't willing to part away with their young "core" for Fox unless it was a guarantee they'd get to the WCF. Rockets aren't in a rush to win a chip, and Fox doesn't fit next to Sengun. Denver's interest is solely dependent on whether or not Murray decides to get his head right. Take out those teams and the left over ones are the Lakers, Heat, and Magic.

But agreed with you. this was not a fun hypothetical to discuss. We should end the convo now, because hopefully we can get Fox signed a long-term deal this summer

Hmm, I thought Fox was the guy nobody wanted. He scores 109 points in back to back nights 3-ish weeks ago and suddenly everyone is willing to trade us their garbage to take him off our hands? Nah, I'm good.

We have the rarest commodity in basketball ... a star player who actually wants to play defense. For as long as that's true, it's more likely these other teams will be dismantling their rosters in exchange for our matching salaries and draft picks than the other way around. If not for some bad luck this team would be 15-10 right now and looking at how many of the teams that we need to beat are led by aging superstars, I'd say that the odds are against half of these Western Conference contenders being healthy going into the playoffs.

I don’t see Fox being traded. Period.

But if he was, perhaps you’re looking at a trade like…

De’Aaron Fox
Trey Lyles

For

Kevin Durant

It would be quite the “win now” move as it not only gives us a better 1st option scorer but it also rebalances the roster and makes the core more complementary considering…
  • Durant fills our need for a big, long, athletic PF who can defend, block shots, and space the floor next to Sabonis.
  • Durant would space the floor for better than Fox does (allowing more room in the paint for Monk, DeRozan, and Sabonis to operate).
  • We’d be able to avoid starting a small backcourt (Fox & Monk) and shift Monk to PG allowing Murray, DeRozan, Durant, and Sabonis to fill out the rest of the starting unit.
  • It would reduce our log jam at the guard spot
The Suns only do this if they are throwing the towel on their current core and like the idea of retooling around a Fox/Booker duo long term.

Again, I don’t see Fox being traded any time soon but the trade for Durant would be quite the swing for the fences. The main issue is you only have a couple opportunities considering how old Durant and DeRozan would be.
