This is part of an e-mail I received from a friend of mine. Some of the text of the e-mail is copied here. There are more photos.

"These pics came from a guy in AZ. Yes, the mule killed the mountain lion. The lion had been stalking them for the better part of the morning, on the way out to a hunt. They were pretty sure it was after one of the dogs. The cat ambushed them, and the mule pictured tossed its rider and went into attack (defense) mode, the horses scattered and shots were fired but no one was sure if they hit the cat or not. Unfortunately, it wasn't until it was almost over that one of the guys started snapping pics. The mule finally stomped the cougar to death after biting and throwing it around like a rag doll. The dogs wouldn't even come close until the mule settled down.

Two of the other photos show a couple of hunting dogs sitting politely about 40 feet away watching the excitement. They apparently wanted no part of that Mountain Lion. Wow, does this sound familiar. My admiration of mules has grown even larger. Mules are cool. QD

ummm...don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but with all the Net hoaxes out there, has this been verified as a true story? It would be really cool if it was true!! Go mule!

Don't know, but if it is a hoax, it was elaborate. There were four sequenced photographs. Sure looked real to me. I have heard of such mule behavior before. Mules and Jersey cows. Don't mess with them.

I got that email a few days ago... Quite disturbing. If some guy set up that Mountain Lion.. I hope the jerk rots in a cozy 8x8 cell.

The Snopes narrative suggested that the photos may have been real, but that perhaps the lion had already been trapped or killed, and the mule incident was after-the-fact. I think this may be partly true. The lion is clearly alive in the first photo. It may have been in a trap. That seems unlikely to me, but who knows. I strongly suspect that there was something "wrong" with the lion in any case. I am pretty sure that a mobile and healthy mountain lion would not have been caught by a mule. The mule defineitely has an attitude with respect to mountain lions. That is fully understandable.

So regardless of the circumstances, the mule is clearly going after the lion. I think that is the point of the photos. Nobody would believe that a mule actually caught a healthy mountian lion. I don't think that is the claim.

I have heard of deer killing dogs. So it happens.

as someone else on here already said, I just hope it wasn't a case of the mountain lion being 'set up' at the hands of some cruel, despicable human. But anyway, it is interesting to see animals that most would think were docile and wimpy, such as mules, do have that butt-kicking mentality to them after all.

Deer killing dogs, QD? Are you just talking about some little rat dogs or?? Wow.

I'm with ya Hndsm. Every time I get an email like this I check snopes.

Still pretty amazing pictures if they are real QD.

My former secretary took her Golden Retriever out every morning to do his business. She lived up in Cool at the time. The dog was sniffing around the bushes when a doe, that had been chased before by this dog, stepped out of the trees, walked up behind the dog, and thrashed him to the ground with her front hooves. Dead as a door nail.

Mules are in no way wimpy. They are quite the opposite.

Wow. The doe was probably getting revenge on behalf of all the fawns killed by various dogs, heh.
