Suprising (to me) names on other team's rosters

Saw some surprise names on various WNBA rosters, including one person who retired from playing a few years ago.

Ex-Monarch Giuliana Mendiola is currently (so far) on the Houston Comets roster.

Vanessa Nygaard (ex-Stanford), who retired a few seasons ago with the Comets, is on the Connecticut Sun roster.

One recent WNBA Draft pick which kinda suprised me that she got cut was Brooke Smith, who also played at Stanford. I was a bit suprised that she got selected late in the second round to begin with. Smith was cut by the Minny Lynx.

I get the feeling that the competition for roster spots is pretty tight for nearly all the teams this year, so I don't expect them to make their team's final roster. But you never know.

And BTW, there was an article about Ruthie Bolton wanting to play for a WNBA team --- any team, even if it isn't the Monarchs --- this year. Did nobody take an interest in her?

Seems like everyone is on the Houston training camp list.
Also rumors of Edna Campbell on Houston's training camp.
Any truth to these?
Yeah...Brooke Smith got the boot quick. Must be tough being the rookie.

Some teams just need bodies or to look at a lot of people at a particular position. That's why I suspect Houston took a flier on Mendiola, they are light in point guard depth. I haven't checked their roster in a while, but she has to be about the 5th person they've brought into camp to play point or combo guard in addition to the players they had returning.

Brooke Smith was recently picked up by CT, and I'd guess if Nygaard is there now too, one or both of them is not there for long.

I'd wonder how much of these blasts from the past are here because they are presently available and not overseas like a lot of the the returning players currently are. We still have 4 players in Spain and Russia and may not see some of them until close to our first preseason game. Other teams are having the same issues.

There have been a lot of interesting names rolling onto and off of rosters since camps opened.

Cisti Greenwalt on the Sky roster

From CNJonline.com...

Greenwalt getting tryout with WNBA's Sky

April 29, 2007 12:45 AM

Former Clovis High and Texas Tech standout Cisti Greenwalt left for Chicago on Monday to get a preseason tryout with the WNBA's Chicago Sky.

The 6-foot-5 Greenwalt recently completed a season in a pro league in Sweden. Although her team struggled to only a couple of wins in a 30-game season, she led the league in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots.

After helping Clovis High win large-school state championships in 1999 and 2000, Greenwalt went on to become the Big 12's all-time leader in blocked shots in a four-year career at Texas Tech. She had a brief stint in the WNBA last summer, playing in five games for the Seattle Storm.

Chicago is scheduled to host Washington in its preseason opener on Friday. The Sky begins the regular season at New York on May 20.

I'm sure there are a few who have been asked to come and fill their training camp rosters just to give them bodies, as MBF said. Edna, for example, lives (at least part of the time) in or around Houston. Maybe they invited her, and her veteran leadership, to help them get through training camp. It is also possible she (as well as they) have no intention of going beyond camp.

I suspect its just getting enough bodies to practice. Monarchs have guys from the Yuba College team and Scotty Brooks practicing with them. I'd actually pay to watch that. ;)

Actually, Edna played in Italy this winter. I believe she has a home in Sacramento, since she has a real estate company here.

Interesting roster there in Houston, though. Latasha Byears, Edna Campbell, Hamchetou Maiga-Ba and Guiliana Mendiola. I suspect only Maiga-Ba will be there on May 22.

I was really hoping the Monarchs would pick up Brooke Smith. Surely she is a better post player than either Wilkins or Wells? Maybe I'm just looking through my Cardinal blinders, though.

GO MONARCHS!!!!

If I had my druthers and could have either of the Stanford seniors, it wouldn't be Brooke, but rather Newlin I'd want to see in Sacramento. Smith's problem at this level is that she is a tweener, and lacks some necessary skills to be successful long term at the 4 or the 5 in the W. If Smith beat out Wells (who is gone as soon as DeMya and/or Adrian Williams returns) or Wilkins - we'd essentially be asking her not to dress until we cut her next year when we need a spot for our first round draft pick in 08, she wouldn't be here much longer than that. If Brooke makes the cut in CT, I'll be surprised.
