Suns looking at Kandi

Former No. 1 draft pick Michael Olowokandi is coming to Phoenix - at least for a day.

Olowokandi, a 7-foot free agent with 393 career starts, is paying his own way to work out for the Suns today but is a long shot to stick.

Phoenix's post play is depending on the returns of Amaré Stoudemire, who had a good informal workout debut Monday, and Kurt Thomas, who is back to weighing 245 pounds like before his foot stress fracture in February.

Olowokandi, the 1998 draft's top pick, could play for a one-year minimum deal ($1.07 million in his case). He has career averages of 8.6 points and 7.1 rebounds.

"He's eager to get out and play a little bit," said his agent, Bill Duffy, who thinks his client could help Phoenix in spots against Dallas' DeSagana Diop or San Antonio's Tim Duncan. "You can get away with stuff in the regular season that you can't in the playoffs. A 7-footer can make a difference. It comes down to isolated plays. You've got to have a big guy."

The intriguing part would be teaming him with Suns assistant Alvin Gentry, who called his former Clippers center a derogatory term in a Sports Illustrated article last year.

Kind of interesting. Could be something for Suns.

I just don't see the Suns overcoming Dallas or San Antonio though. Also, if (big if) T-Mac/Yao are healthy with Battier and the Rockets defense and toughness, adding in the possibility of Kirk Snyder (I like the guys game and potential) and Vassilis Spanoulis (sp) panning out - Suns are done.

113, i'm surprised you were not surprised that i'm not surprised that Kandi-man has been turned into a Marry-go-around from a 1st round pick WOW now there inviting him to camp how bad has this stiff become?

for that price why couldnt we get him? and let the suns get woods.... damn it... oh well... whatever....

Not quite sure I understand all the "surprise" stuff. But, of course he's a bust. Why should that be a surprise to anyone with general knowledge of the NBA from 2001 and on...

As far as numbers go, they've been that of a #1 pick bust, no doubt. I don't think he's been a bad big man, in the general sense the numbers are decent, IMO.

Actually, he and Cato were looked at along with Woods as a back-up center. I assume we chose Woods because of his age, and obviously they see him as a possibility to be something effective for us. From what I've gathered on Woods (various material), I tend to agree.

edit: If Kandi actually does get with the Suns team (which I have no real idea on), and turns out to be solid or something - I'd be disappointed to see "Ooh, why couldn't we of got him?!"-type from the general population on this board. Who, from what I've gathered since I've been here, and with understandable reason(s), hate/dislike Olowokandi to some or a large amount. :p

I actually heard that Loren was on the Suns radar. Loren would be much better for them than Kandi. I don't know how Kandi fits with that team.

I guess the Suns want security at big man if Amare's return takes longer than expected. Not sure if kandiman is the best option though...
