To be fair, the Joe Smith deal was so blatant and stupid and also in hindsight Joe Smith was really not the sort of guy worth the effort of subvert the league’s entire free agent system to keep.

It was so long ago, but weren't other teams doing the same type of thing in the late 90s?
In both those instances the player got what he wanted though right? I am not excusing his methods since I don't know enough about him but it seems he had his client's interest in mind.
