Free-agent swingman Desmond Mason met with the Sacramento Kings this week and could sign as soon as Thursday.

I am confused. I thought the plan was to stick at 13 players. And with Martin, Garcia, Nocioni, Greene, and Casspi covering the swing positions, why bring in another swingman?

Their must be some kind of a trade brewing or something... this makes almost no sense, unless our goal is to bury players on the bench.

That's one thing that came to mind, especially since Petrie says he wants to keep the roster at 13. We've heard no trade rumors at all, but given how quiet our front office is I don't think that even means anything.

But if there is a trade brewing, it's probably either Cisco or Nocioni for us to want to grab another swingman.

This signing makes absolutely no sense...we already have 4 players that play that position. Wouldn't a potential trade happen before the signing?

thats the easiest position to fill. no need to sign anyone aahead of time. plus after the webber "parts" trade i dont buy it.

I doubt a player who agrees to sign a one year deal to go to a non-contending team for little money is a hot commodity :D.

Yeah, but if we didn't seal up Mason now, we might get stuck with Kareem Rush instead! ;)

(Seriously, the list of free agent wings is looking pretty thin. Mason, if healthy, may be as close a thing to a commodity as there is out there.)

Ok cool...but...why take minutes away from Casspi and Greene??

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not really defending the move. I think the minutes SHOULD go to Casspi and Greene. But under the premise that we have a deal on the table sending away either Nocioni or Garcia without getting a wing back, we might want to shore up the wing before pulling the trigger. And if we were trying to shore up the wing with an emergency backup, the best one out there could maybe possibly have been Mason.

That's all I was going for. But I would like for Mason to be the #6 wing if our roster doesn't change, not that it really makes any sense to have him as a #6. A #5, maybe.
