Spencer Hawes

And we almost forget that May beat out Hawes in training camp to be starting center for first few games of this season. All that experiment soon told Westphal was that May was definitely, 100% certain not the answer. Well, now Spencer may not be the answer either but that's not 100% conclusion at only 21. Problem is after May, after Spencer, there's clearly no easy answer, unless you want to stick JT in the 5 spot as discussed earlier in this thread.
He's not the answer to the question they are asking.

As long as they ask Hawes to be a power center who mainly rebounds and defends, he will never work out. Ever. He's not that kind of player, because he's not that skilled in those areas, and he's physically inferior to a lot of centers.

So my point is, Hawes is not the answer, if you want your center to primarily do those things.

And as for JT...at least he rebounds better consistently, but his defense is downright subpar. Not just his foul trouble, but his inability to help out with interior rotations and total lack of shot blocking despite his athleticism and size.

Neither of these guys are even good defensively.

Ya people bash Hawes, Brick has truly made it a art form, but he would be getting the same response anywhere he played. Sacramento is hardly exceptional when it comes to bashing on under performing players. When it comes to what passes as sports media in this town he gets almost no bad press. If Spencer landed in a major market and played like he is know the media would rip him to pieces.

If Spencer can't take the criticism after playing poorly then he has chosen the wrong career. Sacramento fans and media are kinder then most. I don't know if you are trying to use it as a excuse for his poor play or simply floating a theory. If its a excuse its a bad one, and if its true then Spencer is in serious trouble.

I think Westphal tried to light a fire under Spencer by benching him to start the season. It clearly didn't work and now his only option with this roster is to play him and hope for the best.

You can call it an excuse if you like, but I've been a basketball fan for over 20 years and I've seen a player going from a peak season to sitting on the bench the next entire season and chucking airballs whenever he's called on to play, and then having another peak season the next year. I've seen this happen to players many many times, and it all boils down to confidence. Every player has a time in his career in which he plays far far below his potential. The way he deals with that period is crucial. For some players, it destroyed their careers entirely. For others, they used it as motivation and bounced back. I think it's in the best interest of all Sacramento fans that Hawes regains his confidence asap. It's ok to criticize him, but I think singling him out in the way that people here have done and blaming him for pretty much all of the Kings' problems is going to get only the opposite of the desired effect.

Hawes would be a good backup center, but I don't see him as a legitimate starter any time in his career. He straight up sucks, Brad Miller looks like Dwight Howard compared to him (not saying Brad Miller is bad, just Hawes really sucks).

I feel like unless the haters on the board are doing drive bys to Spencer's house, throwing him pages of forum hate mail, I doubt any of our opinions are going to reach him anyway. The only people he will hear will be coaches, and MAYBE the newspapers. His sucking is on his own accord.

I wouldn't count on that. People generally like to know what other people are saying about them, and since this is the official Kings' fans forum, I am quite certain that what's being said here does not escape Spencer's eyes (or any other Kings player for that matter).

Hawes just plain, flat out, without a doubt sucks... We didn't extend him yet did we? So this is his last year right?

From RealGM:

TRANSACTIONS
07/05/07: The Sacramento Kings signed the #10 overall selection in the 2007 NBA Draft, Spencer Hawes, to a four year contract with the third and fourth season at the team's option.

So one more season on the contract if the Kings want him. He's definitely got some value so it doesn't make sense to dump the contract unless something better miraculously comes by.

Kings already picked up his extension through 2010-11. I think it was late october or early november. Picked up Donte's as well.

We need a center- a real center, FAST!

I'm tellin' you we are so lucky we have JT thats doing one hell of a job considering he has to be a power foward and a center.

You can probably find in Europe a better center than Spencer. He has a spot on an NBA roster simply on potential. I have a feeling he wouldn't be playing a minute for the Spurs, for instance, the way he plays right now. Pop will start Bonner at center before he will use the services of Hawes. He really starts to ruin my Kings experience the way Me.J Ford did when he was with the Raptors. One guy who is not on the same page ability or agenda wise with the rest of the squad.

Brad: Listen! don't try to be hero out there, just be yourself, fans love that...

Spencer reminds me of Beno last year. Slightly disconnected...not quite part of the team...not appearing to take responsibility for his game with a bit of a sulking attitude. I hope that what finally clicked for Beno this year will ultimately happen for Spencer. Something just isn't right with him right now, and I sure hope he gets it together soon. I'm sick of watching him hurting our team more than helping it!

With the way Beno is playing this year your coments give me some hope for Spencer to come around.
Is there light at the end of the tunnel, or is that just a train coming?:)

I've noticed this too, the chemistry between JT and Spencer last year was good and I was excited to see where that chemistry to go this year. But it seems that chemistry that I saw last year just disappeared this year. What happened?

Also, Spencer had this attitude about him last year. I just don't see him pumped like before...Hopefully he'll figure it out soon cause I was really excited to see him grow and become a better player.

Spencer is not a great defender.* I got that.* What I don't get is he supposed to have freakishly great post skills.** Yet our offense never calls for him to be posted up inside.* He is always at the elbow or wing and has to back down from 18 ft out.* Why isn't there post plays in the playbook.* Lets get this guys back to the basket where he excels instead of putting him in the postion where he has to face up or run across the lane with a hook.* If Spencer isn't posting he is being left on a island of nothing to do.

Kareem isn't going to turn him into a power center who focuses on defense.

True, I think Spencer is having a off year..but he did ok shot blocking last year. there isnt alot of great defensive centers laying around.

Kings best way to go about it is try and draft a big.
