Spencer Hawes

The Hammer

All-Star
Are you in the mood for some crazy words?

So, I live in Seattle, been here 4 months. I just had a beer at a new bar in a neighborhood here, and talked with a guy who grew up on Queen Anne, like Spencer, who's about the same age as Spencer's father and uncle. So I said to this guy, "So what's up with this Hawes kid?" And he says, "Yeah, I know the Hawes family. I went to the same catholic church as them on Queen Anne. Let me just tell you, I think the Kings got a better center in Spencer Hawes than the Portland Trailblazers did in that draft."

So, go ahead, let your homer dreams go nuts. And base those dreams on the fact that I just heard this from a Seattle Queen Anne old timer.

I say Spencer Hawes is 19. He's got some great post moves. He's obviously got the shooting touch. But he's also got: 1) the smarts and the attitude and 2) the basketball family and training.

We'll see if he can develop the body. But hey, look at McHale! I honestly have a good feeling about this kid. I think he's going to be a lot better than some of the freak-out neg heads have been saying. I think he's going to prove some things in his time. Stranger things have come from #10 (or below) draft picks.

What do YOU think?

Edit: Ok, ok. That was a little crazy. But seriously, what do people think about this kid's upside?

I think it's nice that the guy put in a plug for Spencer like that, and I think he can probably speak with a lot of authority on the subject of Spencer's church attendance.

I personally think hawes will be a good big man in the league in the future if it gains mussle, but just like i have told other people, he is still only 19 his body is still developing, but he still needs to hit the weight room, its all on him what he wants to do with his career, because he has a good low post game, can shoot, good passing, so spence, all i can say is hit the weight room buddy!

I've been a fan of Hawes when I saw his summer league play. I even invested in his jersey before the season started. One of only two jersey's I have ever purchased (Martin being the other). The kid's got the IQ and skill of a 4-5 year college player inside the frame of someone who I believe is barely 20 now. He may not be a genetic freak like Oden but I doubt that he will be the all-around player that Hawes is capable of becoming. And a mature body is not always a good thing. I don't think Oden's body has much more growth to it while Hawes can be molded into a center that can stay with the Kings for 10+ seasons if we so desire.

If Hawes becomes even a decent player by next season then think about what he could be with 5 seasons under his belt.

As far as NBA production is concerned, Spencer Hawes is > than Greg Oden...now.

To answer the OP's question, I'm pretty pleased with what I've seen so far. He's a building block and not a cement block. There's every reason for hope. It feels good to feel good about another young King.

:)

I think the comparisons with Oden are a little bit far fetched.

Offensively, I think Hawes will be a better player. He already has the offensive post moves and a sweet shot that I am not sure Oden will develop. However, everything else you want your C to do, Oden is better at. Defence, rebounding, shot-blocking!

Hawes has the potential to be one of the best offensive centers in the league. However, I think defensively he will be average. Not athletic nor big enough to be a big time short blocker, nor does he have the rebounding nouse to be a monster rebounder.

Think Brad Miller with a post game and you see what Hawes can bring. A bit of a Vlade Divac type except that Vlade was taller and overall bigger which allowed him to block shots on regular basis and be a solid defender.
