He's out (of the rotation),'' McMillan said of Rodriguez. "Right now, he is. He's going to have to play his way in, and that's going to be hard to do unless Blake or Jack just dog it, which I don't think will happen.''
It became apparent last season, and during summer league, that McMillan has no patience for Rodriguez's penchant for turnovers and defensive breakdowns on the perimeter. Still, McMillan said he is not down on Sergio.
Nate McMillan isn't really that crazy about him:
correct me if i am wrong, but is this the same dude who came over to us with the potapenko-skinner swap???![]()
I'll correct you.
You're thinking of Sergei Monia. This guy is a flashy PG from Spain, dubbed the Spanish Magician. His name is Sergio Rodriguez.
I called this kid before the draft. I'd seen him play before and I saw the potential. No one can tell me "nobody knew he would be this good". I know he's still young and relatively unproven, but he's shown flashes of brilliance. His passing and vision is excellent and as he matures his turnovers will go down. I'm telling you all now, he will be a steal at where he was taken.
Funny how people say how terrible he is defensively. He has good lateral quickness and quick hands. It's the typical "he's white so he can't play D" theory that people use. I hate making this into a race issue since it's not one, but that's how some people think. He's not a bad defender and he will get better with time.
I wanted us to draft him and was disappointed when he was on the board and we passed on him. Portland ain't giving him up now, trust.
