Spanish Chocolate

I like Sergio Rodriguez too (and Portland seems to have a surplus of PGs) -- but I also like defense. I don't think he's the right player for our team right now unless we abandon defense entirely and try to become the Phoenix Suns.

Isn't he the Spanish Magician? Yes, I know his game, comparatively, is similar to a young J-Will's, but the Chocolate moniker has already been taken. White chocolate, Spanish chocolate, what difference is there?

Anyway, I'm sure Portland already realizes the potential playmaking young stud they have in their hands. Rodriguez, for a guy who barely plays, is one of the tops in the league in assists per 48 minutes. The writing's already on the wall for him to become a sort of passing specialist in the league. It's obvious Portland wants to keep him. Unfortunately, the only guys we can go for are either unproven young guys with potential, free agent castoffs, current team misfits, old past-their-prime veterans or the oh-so-horrible scrub.

Nate McMillan isn't really that crazy about him:

He's out (of the rotation),'' McMillan said of Rodriguez. "Right now, he is. He's going to have to play his way in, and that's going to be hard to do unless Blake or Jack just dog it, which I don't think will happen.''

It became apparent last season, and during summer league, that McMillan has no patience for Rodriguez's penchant for turnovers and defensive breakdowns on the perimeter. Still, McMillan said he is not down on Sergio.

Frankly, I'm not surprised with McMillan's views about Rodriguez. Flashiness and excitement in the game of basketball usually come at a cost--especially when it comes to passing the ball--and with Rodriguez, it's those sort of no look, spectacular passes which can make him a turnover jack. Hey-sort of like our own J-will back in the Kings days. I've been charting Rodriguez's stat lines ever since he came into the league, and he did start off slow--not really effective offensively, extremely turnover prone, horrible defense (although he was, and still is, a horrible defender) and such other raw attributes which still make him a prospect at this point. McMillan's style of play favors veterans who have the intangibles, poise and skills to make plays that help the team consistently. Rodriguez is simply very up and down--ups and downs within the same game, great flashes followed by horrible miscues. I can understand the fuss about him--but a guy with his potential should draw steady minutes over the course of the season.

I called this kid before the draft. I'd seen him play before and I saw the potential. No one can tell me "nobody knew he would be this good". I know he's still young and relatively unproven, but he's shown flashes of brilliance. His passing and vision is excellent and as he matures his turnovers will go down. I'm telling you all now, he will be a steal at where he was taken.

Funny how people say how terrible he is defensively. He has good lateral quickness and quick hands. It's the typical "he's white so he can't play D" theory that people use. I hate making this into a race issue since it's not one, but that's how some people think. He's not a bad defender and he will get better with time.

I wanted us to draft him and was disappointed when he was on the board and we passed on him. Portland ain't giving him up now, trust.

correct me if i am wrong, but is this the same dude who came over to us with the potapenko-skinner swap???

I'll correct you. :D

You're thinking of Sergei Monia. This guy is a flashy PG from Spain, dubbed the Spanish Magician. His name is Sergio Rodriguez.

Yeah, a lot of people knew he was going to be good. At the time, he's one of the many point guards that I wish we'd drafted instead of Quincy Douby. You're not the only one that saw the potential there, believe me. The guy's highlights were all over YouTube for years before his draft year. I didn't mean to imply that he's a terrible defender, just that he's not a good one. In the NBA, if you're not an above average defender you're going to get burned. The players in the NBA are that good offensively. Sergio Rodriguez was getting burned on defense before he came to the NBA, sure he's got the potential to get better, anyone does, but I doubt he'll ever become a good defender. Strength has as much to do with it as footspeed and Sergio doesn't look like he'll ever put on a lot of muscle.

That doesn't mean he's a bad player, not at all. He's got the level of creativity, vision, and ball control to be another Steve Nash. He's really that good offensively. Steve Nash gets burned on defense too. He can't guard anyone in the post and he can't fight through screens. That doesn't make him a bad player either, just that he's got certain strengths and weaknesses. Part of building a basketball team is recognizing players strengths and weaknesses and finding players that balance each other out. We've had two offensive dynamos in a row at the PG position who've been limited defensively and we've had a lot of success that way, but the team we're building right now might be more successful with a better defender at PG. I like watching the 'Spanish Magician' play and I hope he gets to eventually lead a team. That team doesn't have to be the Kings though. We might be better of going in another direction. There are lots of talented point guards out there.
