1. Please keep political references out of it...
2. Why should the Maloofs lobby for anything? And what exactly would you like them to say? "Please build us an arena"?
Now, for your other comments:
Oh please... Most of those answers are out there. First, the cost of an arena that would meet most needs has been estimated to be $400-$500 million. That would vary, of course, depending on where it's built. The location is one of the points of disagreement so to state the Maloofs haven't educated the public about that is naive. The Maloofs have already stated several times they would be willing to pony up with a portion of the cost. I don't have the exact figures at my fingertips but it has been repeated numerous times in the Bee. What about naming rights? They would be put out for sale, like virtually every other arena, if the people who build the facility have a brain in their heads. As far as the concessions go, that's icing on the cake and something you negotiate further down the road.
Sorry, but for you to say the Maloof's silence has been deafening sounds to me like you haven't been listening.
Oh I've been listening and I have to disagree with you about the Maloofs. I have read many articles and listened to radio, newspaper, and television interviews whenever available for years now as most rabid Kings fans do. They have danced around the issue of what their "fair share" is. They have been asked directly what they would contribute by newspaper, radio, and televison journalists. There vague and ambiguous answers only add clouds of mystery to what they will pony up. They have NEVER given a dollar amount. They have only stated that they would pay what would not put them at "competitive disadvantage". Well, what is that. They have given virtually no specifics on anything related to the arena other than what it should cost to build and that it should be state of the art.
They have done an awful public relations job on trying to sell it to the community. What have they said or done to get people behind it. All I have heard is their reactions to repeated failures of proposed financing of which they have not facilitated. They have to take some responsibility for failing to get the public behind it.
Many uninformed people see the "billionaire owners" as Graswich repeatadly refers to them, as building the hottest casino in Vegas, and another addition to it, raking in tons of cash. Many Sacramentans feel why should they pay for it when Joe and Gavin are spending like crazy in Vegas. They dont understand that these businesses are two separate entities and that one produces revenue whole the other is more of a loss leader and makes very little money, if any. The perception of these rich guys, right or wrong, is out there.
I love the Kings, the Maloofs, and what they have done for the this franchise and for what they have given back to the community but, up to this point they have failed miserably at leading the charge to get a new arena. At some point soon, they need to step up and start getting the masses informed and educated with specifics.
Oh, and for the record. I am willing to pay an extra tax to keep our Kings here.
