Shumpert to start at the 3? (split)

I get the feeling Iman Shumpert might start at the 3, at least to start the season because Joerger will view him as the only guy on the roster who stands a chance guarding opposing wings and he's a veteran . I honestly wouldn't blame him, Vlade needs to be called out for failing to address obvious holes and inbalances on the roster.

I split this into its own thread as I think it's a totally different discussion than where it was initially posted.

I do NOT see Joerger starting Shumpert. In fact, I personally think those who believe Joerger is going to favor veterans over the kids are going to be in for a real shock.

As far as Vlade needing to be called out, that is IMHO just silly - and a topic for still a different thread. Vlade did a lot this off-season and I find it amusing some still cannot find a way to give him credit for anything.

this thread was created based on a hunch. Since we are on the topic, no body knows who the starting three will be come opening night, not even Joerger. That's what training camp and preseason games are for. All I ask of Joerger is to stick with a consistent starting unit and rotation, not go 10-12 players deep, not everyone deserves to play and the team won't build chemistry playing with so many different line ups time and time again.

The original thread was predicting the starting lineup and I said I have a hunch Shumpert will end up starting. Seems pretty on topic to me. Iman Shumpert doesn't deserve his own thread.

As far as Vlade goes its fair game to criticize him. The roster is completely inbalanced with way too many big men and not a single solid wing player(ironically the league is valuing wings and devaluing big men right now). Good fanbases hold their franchises accountable, if you want to look at everything with rose colored glasses I can respect that. Fact is this team has been terrible for over a decade from top to bottom. Sac fans deserve better than the bush league franchise they have had to endure. Trust me I would be ecstatic if Fox, Giles, Bagley, Buddy, Bogi lead this team to success.

Bogdan will start at the three IMO, as was the intention for the LaVine (IMO not good) attempted signing

There was no pressure to find a SF because Buddy/Bogdan IMO should be starting, arguably two of the teams best players. They correctly think Bogdan can play 3, Jackson looked good in SL and isn’t a lost cause, and therefore didn’t need to bring a mediocre SF in

Yeah but... well, wait.... aww... never mind. Fair point. And then there's Marvin!

I am hoping for Bogdan and Bjelly to start 2-3, Shump should be 3rd SF behind JJ

I think this leaves Yogi,Buddy,JJ to light up the second unit

To be clear I don't want it to happen as much as you guys don't, but the history of NBA coaches and Dave Joerger tells me me they will always play veterans. Shumpert is playoff and finals tested. As long as he comes to camp ready and performs Joerger will lean on him, especially on a roster full of young players .

“Shumpert is playoff and finals tested.”

I don’t know that he actually passed the test. Good experience, no doubt, but there are a lot of questions about him as a player.

Whomever gives us the best chance to win should be the motto this year.

And that's what it will be regardless of the decision because it's one of those vague types of justifications for a non winning franchise. Last year the stats showed that whatever they did lineup wise was about as wrong as you could get, yet no correction. I think it should be whatever gives the team the brightest future. Maybe the Kings can surprise the NBA next year but the short view concept is what has hurt this team in it's rebuild thusfar. They have to take the long view but not so long that you are just kicking the can down the road considering much of the teams "young" players aren't really that "young" and realisitcally need to be ready within the next year or so. It's time to start building around something sustainable and start following a true rebuild path which does involve creating and potentially turning over assets when the time is right. Individual productivity will be key.

My thought was this is an interesting sub-topic worth exploring. What will Shumpert's role be in the coming season? Will Joerger continue to rely on veterans even after making the statement that it will be about the kids, where "the training wheels are off"? That's why I split it into its own thread.

...Dude hasn't played in forever against real competition. Could Shumpert end up starting? Sure. We gloriously jettisoned Temple. Jackson is a G-Leaguer. Boggy and Buddy are better suited to SG. Randolph is going to get pinched by Giles and MB3 for minutes. We could use a veteran on the wing to go with the youth in the backcourt and up front to bring calm and presence and execution. But we haven't seen Shumpert perform other than dominate the 24 Hour Fitness Club nearest him. Don't trust your feeling and hunch quite yet. It is based on zippo. If he excels in training camp, as I hope he does, then you'll have a "hunch" worth more than zip. Ciao Blob

So you have sources within the team? Everyone here generate and share opinions based on the information the public has access to, including looking at the past and tendencies of not only Dave Joerger but NBA coaches in general. Coaches have a tendency to lean on veterans, especially if there isn't a standout young player at a given position. This is the case for the current Sacramento Kings and the SF position.

MOD NOTE: A couple of posts have been edited. Amateur analysis of other members doesn't fly, nor does acting as though your OPINION (as accurately pointed out by jcwkings above) is the only one that matters. A couple of warnings have been issued. Remember Rule #1 - Don't be a jerk. Thanks.

Have not seen him play a bunch and living in Ohio and most of the Cavs games were on local TV I take it a few ways.
Iman has been hurt and has missed a lot of games most of his career. With saying that I think we may just keep him for awhile and if heathy he has been known to play some decent defense and can handle the ball.

Bottom line for me is IF he is healthy he just maybe be a veteran we can use. But time will tell?
