Shaquille O'Neal has filed to divorce his wife after nearly five years of marriage, his attorney said Tuesday night.

Attorney Ira Elegant said the petition was filed on behalf of the Miami Heat center in Miami-Dade Circuit Court on Tuesday. It was not immediately clear who is representing Shaunie O'Neal in the case.
The Heat did not have an immediate comment, and Shaquille O'Neal did not respond to a request for comment made through the team.

don't they have some young kids too? I think its a shame to divorce while kids are young. but on the other foot its also bad for the kids if they act as the threads by which a relationship is hanging. Either way, the kids don't get the best deal.

I've heard on the rise guy that his wife was cheating on him with her trainer. Just a rumor but if his wife was cheating would she still get a chunk of his money? What's the rule on divorcing because of adultry? Just curious.

A lot of states have "no fault" divorce. The marital assets will be split according to the laws of Florida. In this case, there may well have been a pre-nup involved. For further information, I'd suggest googling "Grounds for divorce - Florida"...

A quick Google search for "Shaq" and "prenuptial" brings up a lot of articles that seem to reference him having a "very solid" prenup agreement but that he has requested its details be kept private.

Bricklayer, Im hoping you could shed some light on this:

How reliable are pre-nups, particularly in Florida? I have heard cases of it being disregarded, mostly hearsay, and mostly disgruntled men advising against marriage. Are there accusations one of the parties can make to render it null (child abuse, adultery, domestic abuse, etc.)?

Pre-nuptial agreements are made generally to protect the wealth of one or both parties. Mrs. O"Neal is not going to walk away broke by any means. And her children will be taken care of ...

If they weren't reliable (whatever you're using that to mean), they wouldn't be common among the very rich. They are common because they are effective.
