After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos. - Pat Bowlen, Owner

Kind of shocking, everyone knew Slowik HAD to go but Shannahans firing wasn't seen. Im not sure it was the right move. Of course he's hit and missed on some draft picks but every coach does that

Me neither. Of course, there are some pretty good NFL coaches available right now, and some good coordinators on the rise. But Shanahan seemed untouchable. Maybe they have someone in mind.

Risky though, especially when you're building around a young QB.

Its probably about time, but I'm sad to see him go nonetheless.

I suspect like the Kings dumping Adelman its going to get worse before it gets better and they maybe stuck with a mediocre replacement like they were with Phillips after ditching Reeves. Please don't go after any Pats coaches, k? This will probably make it easier for me to root for the Pats when they play next season.

This is largely because he and Bowlen were viewed as best buddies. I have a feeling after several late season collapses that have left them out of the playoffs that buddy or not, you make a move.

Shanny's still a good coach... good god, I hope the Jets don't go after him.

I'm sure they're looking at Josh McDaniels. They should be.

I think Cowher's a better fit for the Jets, 3-4 defense and all. Maybe the Bills owner will rethink his decision to keep Dick Jauron.

I'd be ok with McDaniels going to my other favorite team. It is a good opportunity for him, better than the Browns or Lions. Though Patriots land is concerned that he will follow Pioli if Pioli splits. I still think that is much ado about nothing, his job is quite secure in New England. If he wants a challenge all he has to do is wait until BB decides to hang it up, in the meantime he can collect a steady check and be hailed as the other half of a genius tandem.

Cowher allegedly is not coaching next season. We'll see.

exactly, and then theres the fact that he still had 3 years for 20 million on his deal which will influence the next hiring

Well, the early reports were that he didn't want to talk to the Jets, and now he's having a meeting with them about the job and bringing in his own personnel guy.

I think his shooting down the Browns was more about not wanting to face the Steelers twice a year for the foreseeable future than it was not wanting to coach. And since Mangini went into NY and turned the defense into a three-down unit, and they just drafted Vernon Gholston last year, I think that's all pretty appealing to Cowher. Don't know that he'd be as effective without Dick LeBeau running the defense.

Meh; I think the owner made this change because he wants to do what's necessary to win. He knew there was three years left on Shanny's deal; he probably will bring in someone he's excited about, without regard for the price tag.

Maybe they'll bring Elway in to work on Cutler... I'd like that if for no reason other than it might keep him from Colorado's senate seat.

The Browns seems like a job from hell. The owner is talking about bringing in a guy like Pioli but interviewing coaches before the GM gets there and then speculating to the media about the candidates personal decisions. Sounds like a meddler who can't keep his mouth shut.

Like Jerry Jones North. Only worse.

I believe it, they were buddies. But when you get down to it the last few years have been unacceptable. And Shanny's a great coach, but I think only a fair GM. I wonder if he was unwilling to give up control there? I'm sure there are a number of "ok" teams that are rethinking whether or not they like their present coach now that he's available. Tough move.

I heard that Shanahan was unwilling to fire his defensive coordinator, and that had something to do with it. But you're right, it probably was time for a new voice there.

It's times like this that you realize how special JoePa, Jeff Fisher, Bill Cowher and even Shanahan are.

Its kind of a strange decision since I figured they'd go in a defensive direction. But McDaniels had to go somewhere and I'm glad its to a team I like.

My one concern is that you take a team that has struggled running the ball the past couple of seasons (even with Shanahan, one of the best zone blocking coaches ever) and throw in an offensive coordinator that loves to call pass plays. I think they'll figure all that out, but if Mike Martz winds up being the play caller in Denver, they might as well not carry any running backs.

Strange indeed. I don't know much about McDaniels, but I figured they'd go in a defensive direction as well

He has a reputation for developing and getting the most out of QBs which is probably what they were thinking, Cassel credited him big time for his development. That was Shanny's reputation back in the day as well, so perhaps Bowlen sees a young Shanny in McDaniels? I'm thinking this proves it was more about the GM Shanny than the coach Shanny. I do believe they were also making a bid at getting Pioli though the Chiefs seem to be the frontrunners there though I suspect when the dust settles Pioli will stay with the Pats. If he really wants a "challenge" all he has to do is ride out the cushy job he has now until BB leaves.

Well poop. Wrong on that last front.
Pioli to Chiefs

Herm didn't exactly set the world on fire with the Jets either. There are better options out there, though they may not want to coach a team owned by Jerry Jones.
