[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]In a column by R.E. Graswich published Oct. 9 on Metro Page B1, Sacramento developer Joe Benvenuti, who is a part owner of the Kings, was quoted as follows: "It's my understanding they have an agreement to move the team to Anaheim," Joe said. "I expect to read about it in The Bee." Benvenuti denies making this statement.
It is The Bee's policy to acknowledge errors promptly. Corrections will appear on Page A2 as well as in the section where the error occurred. Errors in Metro should be called to the attention of Assistant Managing Editor Scott Lebar, (916) 321-1182 or slebar@sacbee.com.

Did Joe say that? - likely.
Should Joe have said that? - definitely not. He's a minority owner of the Kings and should not be sharing anything that big whether true or not.
Is it true? - about as true and locked into stone as the agreement between the city and the Maloofs are today. What they probably got was an agreement to talk.
Why did Joe say it? (if he really did) - to put some pressure on the Maloofs and the city to get their rears in gear and get a deal done.

Anytime you discuss Anaheim, the conversation has to include Henry Samueli. He owns the Ducks and has been trying to buy an NBA team for Anaheim. It is rumored he was the blank check bidder for the Sonics. His deal is that he wants to buy unconditionally and move. The OKC guys that bought the Sonics agreed to be more patient. I guess we should take it as a good sign that Benvenuti hasn't sold his shares to Samueli. Or just that Samueli doesn't want to own a minority stake. He wants control of the Honda Center (formally the Arrowhead Pond) and he gets that with an NBA team. Why does it matter? Because the Maloofs would want more than just basketball revenue in Anaheim just like they want here in Sacramento.

Somehow this doesn't surprise me in the least.

I like how RE just throws stuff out there and isn't made to retract it in his column when shown to be an outright lie.

If Graswich had ANY kind of leg to stand on, the Bee would not have issued the retraction. It looks to me, pure and simple, like Graswich was caught putting words into the wrong person's mouth.

Sounds like someone got an unfavorable backlash after "Reading all about it in the Bee".

Anyone can deny something said or done.

Just look at Clinton. :)

If Graswich had any kind of proof Benvenuti had made the statement - including anyone else who might have heard it - the Bee would NOT have printed the item they did above. Instead of trying to point a finger at Joe Benvenuti, who has no past history of saying things out of school, so to speak, why not just accept the most obvious answer?

Graswich was wrong.
