Selfish play has Adelman alarmed

Injuries also concern the coach following the Kings' dreadful performance against the Spurs.

It sounded funny coming from Kings coach Rick Adelman on Monday afternoon. Funny as in strange, as in rare, but not as inaccurate.

http://ads.sacbee.com/RealMedia/ads...l/64313865323634663431663263626230?_RM_EMPTY_ "We're not a selfish team," he said, "but we played selfishly (in Sunday night's 103-73 home loss to the San Antonio Spurs). But like I said, if someone would have told me our starters would have one assist in a game, I'd say you're crazy. If that doesn't say to them that they didn't move the ball, I don't know what ever is going to say it."

Adelman noted that the Kings have played poorly before and viewed what they failed to do the next day on film.

"The film always tells on us," he said. "But I don't remember us doing that at home."

That's because Adelman and the current Kings were nowhere near Sacramento a little more than nine years ago, when the team last suffered such a lopsided beating at home. However, when Houston delivered that 133-93 drubbing Dec. 12, 1995, the Rockets were the reigning NBA champions. And those Kings were just hoping to make the playoffs, unlike the current team that considers itself one of the league's best and a legitimate title contender.

With the New Jersey Nets visiting Arco Arena tonight, Adelman said he hoped to regain the services of power forward Chris Webber. He did not play in the second half Sunday after spraining his right ankle early in the second quarter.

Adelman sounded less hopeful about energetic reserve swingman Maurice Evans, who has a pulled groin muscle.

"We're going to have to wait and see how he feels," the coach said. "But I don't know."

Webber and Evans didn't practice Monday, and they weren't alone. Guard Mike Bibby (ankle) and forward Peja Stojakovic (back) were idled, too.

This season, the Kings have shown a tendency to play down to the level of their opponents. Sacramento has struggled against some lower-echelon teams and lost to New Orleans on the road and Golden State at home.

But other than during their 1-4 start, the Kings usually have competed well against the NBA's best, including an 86-81 home victory over the Spurs on Jan. 2. That was not the case Sunday, when they played impatiently and lazily on the offensive end and without care for each other on the defensive end.

"You can lose to (the Spurs)," Adelman said, "but I never expected us to come out and play that way, where they just seemed to be a step quicker, a step higher in their jumping, everything. They just had a bounce to their step we didn't have."

Bibby said the Kings were wounded but not broken by the defeat.

"It was upsetting and embarrassing to lose by that much, and at home is really embarrassing," he said. "But to even lose by that much anywhere (is embarrassing). Even to lose at all hurts. It hurts your pride a little."

Bibby said the Kings are looking forward to the rematch with San Antonio on Thursday, when they start a three-game road trip.

"I was talking to Chris," he said of a Monday conversation, "(and saying) that we need to have payback on our minds when we go out there. Me, Webb and Peja were sitting there getting treatment, and we were talking about it. And that was one thing that came up."

Bibby has maintained the Kings need to be more committed to helping each other defensively.

"We let them do whatever they wanted on offense, and we just had an all-around bad game," he said. "It's shaken off. We watched film (Monday). We don't have that many games like that to where everything goes wrong.

"(Sunday's) game doesn't have anything with (tonight's) game. I think we'll be fine. We always respond (well)."

5 assists from each starter tonight

And so the injuries have started to catch up? :(

I am glad the team was embarrassed:

I just hope we have a couple of starters on the floor.

i have total confidence that they will bounce back and take their anger and frustration from Sundays game out on the lowly nets

i also have confidence that they are gonna bring their A-game into San Antonio's SBC Center....the Spurs fans are waiting to "close out" the series against us...they say it like its an easy win...cuz we'll "forget to play defense" or something

if we beat the Spurs on Thursday that would give the Spurs two back to back loses and send the Spurs fans into total hysteria...i too like the Spurs but no where near as much as my Kings...i spent all of yesterday on spursreport.com....boy and ya think we can't take a loss...its really hard for them being the best team in the league record wise ya know

Am I one of the only people who are not impressed with the San Antonio Spurs. True they have the best record in the league and they play good defense. But I do not think they are the best team in the league like many others may say. Correct me if I'm wrong but they didn't win the title last year right? And with the exception of Barry (Brent or Jon, I don't know which is which because frankly I don't really care) isn't this the same Spurs team from last year that was up against the Lakers last year like 2 or 3 games to none and then went on to lose the next 4 games. IMHO the Spurs have no heart. They always play good basketball during the season but last playoffs showed me that they have no heart. They lose one game at the buzzer and then no response follows. They lost the next three as well. At least when the Kings get bumped out of the playoffs, they go out fighting (game 7 losses the last 3 years). Not to mention the Kings have not played the last 3 playoffs at full strength either. You may or may not agree with me but I just do not think that the Spurs deserve to be placed on the high pedestal that they are on. And it just makes me mad when people say that a win against the Spurs will tell if Sac deserves to be called an elite team or that a game against the Spurs is a statement game and if the Kings lose then they'll never have a chance because blah blah blah.... To me it's just getting to be a bit redundant.

This is a key fact not to know.

The Spurs are the team to beat right now. Best record and they just destroyed us. Also, they were a bad call from going to the conference finals and beyond last year.

I think San Antonio is pretty dang good. But I do agree that (IMHO) they never seem to have the passion or heart that many teams have. They are so even keel, that sometimes it's hard to know if they are excited or not. Even Tim Duncan (who is one of my favorite non-Kings NBA players) shows very little emotion on the court. That said, I think that being so even keel can be as asset. The Spurs are very consistent, and seem to play their game even when things are going poorly. So, they might not have the passion, but they don't get all bent out of shape when their shots don't fall. I don't know. I feel like we could take the Spurs in a 7 games series if we were healthy and playing at the top of our game. I honestly think we could take basically any team under those circumstances. The problem is, we historically struggle with injuries, and our play isn't always consistent. We will see what the season brings and how it all plays out.

Yeah if thats how you want to look at it. Then the kings were also a bad call (game 6) from the 02 Finals. They only had one game to respond and almost did. It was like the first game 7 overtime ever. Last year the Spurs had 3 or 4 games left to respond and they did not. You may think they are the team to beat but I do not. We'll see come playoffs because right now, I do not think any team is a shoo in for the finals.

A question, does best reqular season record = best team in NBA?

I said nothing about a shoo in. Nobody is a shoo in. Based on what we have seen in the nba this year, it seems obvious that the Spurs are the front-runners. I would love it if the Kings were (considered) the best, but they are not. Deservedly so.

I know you didn't say that. I was just adding some more of my opinion in. I actually like the fact that the Kings are under the radar because it gives them the opportunity to either surprise people or prove them wrong.

I would agree that the Kings are not the best team in the NBA but when they play their game (i.e against the Cavs and some other games before), I think they can beat anybody. I'm just not sold on the Spurs. I do not dislike them. I'm just not impressed and would not be surprised if they don't win the title although many people in the media are saying that they will.

I kinda agree with both of you, the Spurs are definately the best Team in the NBA right now. But then again before last game, the series was 9-9 in the last 18 with 4 overtimes... and they haven't been the team to knock us out yet. I think they are the best team at the moment, but looking at the matchups I'm not totally scared of them either. I mean they let it slip away against a (debatable) semi-weak laker team last year... but one way or another we're gonna find out.

Well, according to AV (in an article I posted in the NBA forum) it's pretty much all over except for the actual trophy presentation.

Yeah and she had LA winning the championship last year in 6 games too! I think the so called "experts" were exposed pretty badly in last years Finals. Nothing is set in stone yet...This year it's up for grabs. I just wish we could "grab" some rebounds!

Who do you think is the best team in the NBA right now?

They have heart! That .4 second shot by Fisher really break their hearts ;). Just like the Horry shot in '02. The Lakers were predicted to be the Champ last year, not the Spurs. But they did a great job versus the Lakers until the 4 straight loss! They are a great team, a Championship caliber every year since winning the title in '99, with only the Lakers as the two teams been in the Finals the last 5 years! They are not overated, they are simply the best!

They are the best team right now! Because they have all-around basketball talent. Defense, Offense, Rebounds, 3 points. etc.... Any team are not called the best team in the NBA if you don't lead in the standings, Phoenix was the best and hot team last month because they were leading, and the Kings will make it, after beating the Spurs, Wolves and Sonics...

Of course, you can't be the best if you are in the top, just like being the top one in your class! You are the best!

Indiana was the best team last year!

In the playoffs, its another story! Its another standing, another best team will emerge, another level, so by winning it all, you are definitely the best team in NBA! Just what the Pistons did.
