GM jobs don't open up every day, it's a dream job, you pretty much always allow your guys to interview for them and take them when they come up. It sucks that Phil had to suck so bad and the job is toxic that others probably rejected the past few weeks. Cost of having a strong draft.

GM is the top position for any organization.
I would rather get the Knicks 2nd round pick (if a 1st is not possible).

Is it even known what role this guy has had in our operations besides Spears piece about draftees supposedly being more apt to work out here? The trade down for Jackson/Giles seemed a Vlade strategy. Free agency, which saw us use a lot of our money on players on last legs was controversial. But if he was key to the operations I'm wondering if the organization would have allowed him to speak to NY at all

Granger's departure was pretty expected at some point.
The reality is the Granger is an NBA company man, and was placed here by the NBA. He will be moving on to the next franchise that needs a turnaround.
A guy with his knowledge and clout needs new challenges. He would have atrophied here and I do think he has accomplished most of what he could eventually do. Other than KJ and Stern, Granger is the guy who turned this franchise around.
Godspeed Mr. Granger.

To be honest, Perry main strength was his respect and connections around the league.
His actual player personnel moves and talent evaluations (see Orlando) were questionable at best.
I suspect the players picked in the draft and the free agents acquisitions were mostly Vlade decisions.
Furthermore, I would want to keep Vlade as the main decision maker (even if Perry was here), which is why Perry probably decided to leave, so he can that ultimate power in New York.
It hurts to lose such a respected and experienced FO member, but I think if we can find a well connected, experienced and respected replacement, there will be little harm done.
My feeling is that Vlade has always been the main decision maker in all these moves this summer, not Perry.
Vlade seems like an open minded an humble guy so he probably learned what Perry had to teach pretty quick.
I don't feel it's a huge loss to be honest. Vlade is our rock. He got Perry and Joerger so he obviously is building rapport around the league himself. Plus he's the ulitmate loyalist. I think he might feel a little personally responsible for 2002 and wants to bring a championship to the city as a result. Would make for an epic tale.

Totally agree with you on this. Much ado about nothing. But then the alarmists don't need much to get all worked up and looking for the negative.I guess I've just become a lot less emotionally invested in things like this. "A bit alarming"? Chris Granger was never going to stay here forever; he came to do a job and he did it. Whatever issues may have factored into his departure are not, IMHO, panic-worthy.
Yes Scott Perry has only been here a few months BUT he's got every right to pursue career advancement. I'm kind of flattered other teams are now looking to us for candidates; that hasn't happened in a very long time to the best of my memory.
If Scott Perry does accept the job in New York, I have confidence that Vlade and company will use the same sound judgment in picking his successor as they did in picking him.
But hey, if some want to be alarmed or panicked or convinced we're now worse than ever, so be it. I made my initial comment but I'm not gonna get into a lengthy board battle about it. In all honesty, I'm just not that interested.

Sorry, no. It's up to each organization to define the roles of its corporate officers and top mgmt. There is no rule that defines for all organizations what a GM does.
