Sacramento signs Jamal SampsonAugust 9, 2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Forward Jamal Sampson signed with the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday, joining his fourth team in four NBA seasons. Sampson played one season at California before entering the NBA draft. He appeared in 23 games with Charlotte last season, averaging 3.4 points and 5.3 rebounds before being waived. He missed significant amounts of playing time because of various injuries. Sampson also played for Milwaukee and the Los Angeles Lakers

Now discuss!!!!

This could be the prelude to trading Skinner although I'm not sure that Sampson would be an adequate backup C to Brad. However, for his career (not a very good sampling: 30+ games) he does average 18+ boards a game per 48 min.

I think this is a solid move if we didn't use any of the MLE. He's got a lot of potential and is sort of a better-Jabari Smith (oh, such high praise). He was pretty awesome at Cal.

Any idea what type of signing this is? Is it a guaranteed contract, or are we going to start grabbing up the available guys to bring to camp and check out their usefulness to us?

Well, now we've got our backup center. You've got to give Petrie credit for consistently plugging holes with inexpensive, undervalued players. His rebounding numbers are great for a backup center. Skinner would be better used as a backup PF. I've liked every signing Petrie has made so far this summer. We've got a starting SG, two backup PGs, and a backup C and we still have all of our MLE (assuming this is a minimum contract). Now there's just that whole PF problem to figure out, but there's still time to work something out there.

okay, red flag up. can someone elaborate on these "various injuries"?!?!
Maybe its better to come to the Kings having used all your injuries up before with your old team.

now we can trade for boozer and harpring....

He can rebound and is tall. If he can give us 5 rpg playing a solid 10-15 minutes I will be happy while staying out of the way of the offense.

I say make his only goal rebounding, and in fifteen minutes, he could bring down at least 7 boards, thats all we need from him.

Looks promsing in a lot of ways. He just needs to clear up those injuries. I also saw an article about how he was waived from the bobcats, basically becuase of injuries and lack of availability. Waived by the Bobcats? Maybe being that close to seeing his NBA dream slip away will put the fear of God into him. We can only hope, cause it looks like if it does he could be a real legit player.

Edited by VF21 to add text from nbadraft so it won't be missed...again. ;)

Overall: 96

NBA Comparison: Samuel Dalembert

Strengths: The dreaded "P" word. Jamal has great potential. But at this point his game is very raw. However, 7 footers with his athleticism are not a dime a dozen. Has long arms and very good shot blocking ability. Has the potential to be among the game's elite centers, but has a lot of dedication and hard work in front of him before he can even think about that. Has excellent quickness for a 6-11 bigman. Good shot blocker/rebounder with touch around the basket.

Weaknesses: Lack of skills. Jamal will be another player on the 3-4 year plan. A high risk/reward type. Sometimes these (early entrant) players blossom into superstars and sometimes they fizzle into duds. Had injury problems in high school. Lack of strength will keep him from making much of a splash quickly. Desire is still under question. Doesn't appear to be the most disciplined player.

Notes: Cousin of ex-NBA center Ralph Sampson.

Did you read the quote at the bottom? We really are keeping it in the family:

this guy played an exceptional role for the lakers. can be a pretty solid backup. i know he's better than skinner. looks like we're focusing more on the depth of our bench. we've already signed hart, jamal, price and we HAVENT gotten rid of anyone except for tag and bobby. our bench now consists of

hart, jamal, price, skinner, thomas, corliss, darius, kevo, fransisco. pretty deep bench!!

Yep, he IS related to Ralph Sampson -- they are cousins.

As loyal Kings fans, lets try not to hold that against him. :)
