Luke Walton was not out of a job for long. Officially fired After coming to a “mutual agreement” to leave the Lakers on Friday (it was more of the crossed out part than the official line) Walton met on Saturday with Kings' GM Vlade Divac and quickly came to terms to take over as the Kings' head coach. As noted by Cunningham, Divac had interest three years ago but Walton wanted to return to the Lakers organization.

Talks between Sacramento Kings general manager Vlade Divac and Luke Walton to become the franchise's next head coach have reportedly progressed rapidly, with a deal expected to be finalized soon. About five minutes after hearing Luke Walton had been dismissed as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings general manager Vlade Divac called Walton's agent. Finalizing the deal that brought Walton to Sacramento as the Kings new coach didn't take much longer. After getting the call Friday, Walton changed plans to take some time off and flew to Sacramento the following day instead.
