Sacramento Kings: 23rd Best Organization in Sports According to ESPN

This is an annual polldone by ESPN to rank the best franchises in sports based on Revenues, Fan Relations, Ownership, Affordabillity, Stadium Experience, Players, Coaches and Championships.

The reason why this is an interesting topic here in this forum is that our Sacramento Kings has fallen from 4th in all of sports in 2003, to 14th in 2004 and now 23rd in 2005.

Why do you think?

To me this has coincided with several issues that have come up in the past two years:

Losing Game 7 in 2002 WCF
Chris Webber Knee Injury
Arena Issue
Lack of Television Deal
Finally, the trade of Chris Webber

In your unbiased opinion, has this organization under the ownership of the Maloof Family reached it's peak? Or can we see better days coming?

Depends on whether Sacramento will give them an arena deal. Without a new arena the Kings will be gone in five years. The maloofs want to win, and if they are an even playing field revenue wise with other owners in the league they will make sure we are consistantly competing to win. If we keep forcing them to play at Arco or buy their own arena they won't work to be as competitive and will eventually leave, and they should react that way in my oppinion.

I think ticket prices really hurt them. If I recall they are the third highest in the league and quite frankly the product has not kept up with the increase in ticket prices. ARCO's amenities also leave alot to be desired in comparison to other arenas.

I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with trading Chris Webber. This poll was done surely before that trade was done. One of the criteria for the poll was Stadium Experience. The stadium experience compared to a lot of other arenas sucks here in Sacramento. I think that's probably one of the biggest hits for us. And, of course ticket price, especially for the arena that you are paying to go into.

I think the only way it hasnt reached its peak is if the arena issue is solved...otherwise, the Maloof family in this city will be history, with their team, and an afterthought in another 4-5 years. Sacramento will be a ghost town, drawn to only the likes of minor leagues such as the AAA with the River Cats.

First, I'm not unbiased but I'll attempt to answer as honestly as possible.

Has this organization reached its peak? No. The Maloofs did everything they could to build a team capable of winning a championship. The fates were cruel and it didn't work out. Does that mean they're not going to be willing to regroup and try again? I can't see anything to indicate they've changed their desire to win it all. In fact, I think it's pretty plain the rebuilding process is now officially underway...

Can we see better days coming? Depends on what you mean by better days. I'm sure we'll continue to see good days and maybe even excellent days. We aren't going to turn into the LA Clippers.

My honest and semi-educated belief is that the Maloofs and the city WILL get an arena deal done.

When You look at the number it might be interpreted in many way

If You look wher the Lakers are :D - You realize how good we are

I hope they do get an arena deal. I look at it this way. Steve Cohn has come back to the table ok. Now as I remember the city said they could contribute up to $175M. The land owners in Natomas said originally they could get $275M for 7000 acres I believe. Then the 2000 acre group dropped out. Ok let's divide 275M by 7. Then you get 7 equal parts then multiply that by 5. With that you get $196,428,571. Let's just say $196M. Now you add $175M +$196M and you get...hey look at that $371 M dollars.

Theres no way the people will allow the City to give the Maloof S&E $175 million for a new stadium. They might allow $50-75 million but that could be stretching it.

The Maloofs will have to pony up 50-75 easily.
