(CNN) -- J.D. Salinger, the famously reclusive author whose 1951 novel, "The Catcher in the Rye," became a touchstone for generations of readers, has died. He was 91.
The author died Wednesday of natural causes at his home in New Hampshire, according to a family statement that his literary agent, Phyllis Westberg, provided Thursday.

While I can appreciate how people would like "Catcher", it wasn't exactly my cup o' tea (It seemed to me over-the-top modernist drivel). Combined with his, err, "eccentricities", he leaves behind a bizarre legacy.

I am sure he will be missed (but since he locked himself in a concrete bunker for the past couple of decades, he's been missed for a while)

I did quite enjoy the book, probably because I had gone to a New England prep school for a year and ran like hell and got this to read a year or two later. Most of my friends hated it, so I find this Onion article amusing as all heck.

Never read the book. Don't even know what it's about. All I know about it is that, in Conspiracy Theory with Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts, that book is a part of the plot. Supposed to be really good, huh?

RIP Salinger.

Like just about any 20th century classic it is largely love it or hate it.

The Onion's always been good, but lately, they are on fire. I think its just all the little mini items they concoct on a seemingly hourly basis for Facebook and the like.

Catcher was not my cup of tea either, but I still recognize it as very good.
