Rename: Alternatives to a boycott

Kingsfans,

Today's new has been frustrating, saddening, disheartening. I believe that the collapsed arena deal has created great uncertainty for the continued Kings presence in Sacramento. We've fought this hard; let's keep fighting.

I've seen some proposals to boycott a Kings game. While I appreciate the mentality, I believe that we are capable of much more. I also believe that the issues that have been raised in this entire fiasco concern more than just Kings fans. The league is a business and it is structured in a such a way that cities are largely helpless when owners want to move their team to a different city. This has happened to Seattle before us, it may happen to us, and it could very well happen to other markets in the future.

As fans, our voice is our dollars. A boycott for one game in Sacramento is a blip on the radar to the NBA, and will most likely not affect the other owners. Let's use the power of the Internet to reach out to every other sports board and ask that other fans boycott all NBA games for one week next year, in solidarity with our cause. I'd propose that we begin formulating the best week in which we can form this boycott in this thread. Additionally, we may want to create a list of other sports boards where we can post a request or "call to arms" with other NBA fans. I'd love to hear what other fans here think of this proposal. It would be a good idea to draft up a form letter that we can send to other forums' moderators asking for permission to post on their board.

Please use this thread to help plan this boycott, if you are interested. I believe we could also use a mission statement, purpose, goals, etc. Might not be a bad idea to figure out how else we might publish this idea.

Not sure if boycotting a Kings game is a blip on the radar if you go about it differently.

While I am not in Sacramento but would dearly love to be there to help with this. My idea was along the lines of being strategic and gaining national coverage and respect of the rest of the league and the world for that matter for being unique!

Boycotting all the games, not going to the games etc... is doing EXACTLY what the Magoofs are banking on. I beg you, do NOT do what Charlotte fans did with George Shinn, it will not end well and we WILL lose our team. What I had in mind was a variation of things.

I would like to see fans boycott a game so it is literally played in an empty arena with not a single fan in there. However, to make a point and draw national attention, I would like to see the fans have a protest outside the arena with a lost of signs showing LOVE to the PLAYERS but wanting the Maloofs to sell. The rally needs to be loud and and proud without being irrational. What gets the media attention then, is a game off the court rather than on it for that single game. It black marks Maloofs nationally, but the fans come off looking good because they are there is numbers fighting for their team. They LOVE the team but dislike the Maloofs. Media attention will get drawn away from he game and on what will be happening in front of the arena.

You guys can even stage this for a quarter or a half or preferably a whole game. Then you follow that up with a sell out where the fans, once again flood the arena with signs of their strong dislike for the Maloofs but strong love for their team, but knowing how much of pantsies Maloofs are they would probably confiscate the signs. Anyway, this time you are staging a silent protest. You are attending the game, showing love to your team but you are sitting there in complete silence....the complete opposite of the Arco Thunder. The national media would be following this like a hawk while the Maloofs are exposed for the scumbags that they really are.

From then on, every game there should be anti-Maloof signs and chants, boos every time you see them or their name gets mentioned but support our team. We as fans need to be REALLY careful with this. My initial reaction was to say "**** them no way am I supporting the Kings any more" but then I thought about it and realised that is EXACTLY what they want and it will no doubt result in re-location as they have lost the support of the community. However, if we continue to support out team but make it very clear with protests and boycotts and signs and everything else that we are not interested in being associated with failures such as the playboys, we will make it really hard for the BOG, the NBA and any casual fan of the NBA to side with the Maloofs and in NBA's and RC's case, an approval to move the team from Sacramento.

We need to show our LOVE for the team but call it hate for the Magoofs. Just turning our backs on the team will only cost us something that is dear to us. Show our disgust in other ways but DO NOT boycott the team. Show the NBA the fans are still the best in the world, its just that the owners suck.

Just imagine how this could get the attention on the global scale. First time ever that there is attendance of 0 in the NBA game because the fans are showing their love for the team and dislike of ownership outside the arena followed by a sell out with a silent protest. That would also be a world first.

NEVER underestimate the power of FANS! They wield more power than they realise! Let unite and force those dickheads to sell and keep our team where it belongs.

Turning the league against Sacramento isn't going to help anything. Everyone is on our side... except for the Maloofs.

I had proposed the boycott because, from my perspective, we have the emotional support of the Stern and the other owners, but when it comes down to cruch-time, like it did today, they will not hold the Maloofs to their negotiaions.

I do see the validity in what you are saying. Maybe boycott wasn't the best idea? Is there something else short of a boycott we could suggest other NBA fans do to show solidarity with Sacramento?

I'd rather see a packed arena stand in silence and turn their backs to the court for several minutes, if not a whole quarter. That would grab headlines.

Agreed, and everyone wearing a white or red t-shirt with a slogan or logo that is anti-Maloof. Not crude or vulgar, but anti-Maloof.

I agree - I doubt the national NBA fans really give a rat's arse about the future of Sac as an NBA city, even though it could have ramifications for other small market teams.

Perhaps for those who here have the time and drive, we could use call-ins and emails to national sports radio shows (i.e. Jim Rome and anyone else out there we can get to). Get the word out about how the Maloofs have screwed the City, and the NBA is letting them do it.

I started doing this more than a decade ago during visitor's opening introductions. It sent a clear message (and amused those around me) & is much easier than sitting down after the national anthem then getting up again for the Kings' introductions. :-D

Exactly. Nothing speaks louder than an arena filled with 17,317 fans and total silence.

I haven't read the above because it's hard on the eyes. I have tickets to tomorrow's game and, even tjhough my son can't go, I'm going. My last game of the year.

I have no desire to punish anyone. I like my Kings in Sacramento but I know they won't stay unless their owners, whom I assume are practically broke in relative terms, unless their owners can survive financially here or can sell in the best way possible. So in my best interest I will go and I will not withdraw my season ticket deposit.

I may start a thread in a few days when we've had a chance to cool off seeking discussion of what is likely and what is unlikely to happen assuming all our parties are good guys. But not today.

My take FWIW is to boycott what's left of this season and next season, too if there's no surprise progress for the ESC. I do not agree with the ones that say by boycotting the games you will be doing the Maloofs a favor so in turn they can use that as an excuse and apply for relocation because of no so-called 'fan support'. The Maloofs are too poor to move and too poor to stay. Even if I'm wrong they would be moving for the 2013 -2014 season anyways. Why fill their pockets with money for one season when they're bailing? People also say "I feel bad for the players." Don't worry. The players will do just fine. They make a lot of money.

There's absolutely no guarantee the Relocation Committee will approve a move, especially if it's clear that the community/fan support for the TEAM has remained high despite all the smarmy dealings of the Maloofs.

As far as the players go, it's not about the money. It's about a pretty good group of young men who have tried despite more obstacles than a Olympics hurdle race. You honestly think guys like Isaiah are just out there for the money? Really?

As was mentioned in another thread:
"SELL THE TEAM!"
"SELL THE TEAM!"
Say it loud. Say it proud.

Ive withdrawn my deposit for season tix. And ive shredded my tix for SA and the lakers. No one will be in my 2 seats.
Let's see, Parking, a hot dog, 3-4 large import beers, and some nachos. X 2 seats X 2 remaining games. Thats a little dent in the maloofs wallet. Just doing my part.

Gonna pimp my sig a little bit here, but "We want Burkle" was a nice ring to it.
