Remember John Lennon

25 years ago today, December 8, 1980. I was only 8 years old at the time, but I still remember hearing about it and being so shocked, horrified, and sad. Our family were big Beatles fans. It's just unbelievable that something to cruel to happen to such a great legend.

I can say I wasn't alive, but the man's music has touched billions of people. Days like this put things in perspective for me. A man who seemed to have everything was killed for nothing. Life is too short to take it for granted.

His life was hard enough as a child, with his mother being killed after re-establishing a relationship with her for a few years. Then during the bagism phase of his and thru his marriage to Yoko, he was treated pretty harshly by the media. There's a great documentary about his last 10 years or so called Imagine, goes thru his whole story.

The deranged nut even got an autograph the day he killed him. There's a picture of Lennon signing his album. Ineffectual male, just like Tim McVeigh, you name it.

John Lennon's contribution to the music industry as a whole can never be measured. Personally, I wasn't really introduced to the wide range of his musical talents until my teens, but since then there is hardly a day that goes by that I'm not listening to something Lenon is singing. Instant Karma, Mind Games, Whatever gets you through the night, Working Class Hero, Well Well Well.....I love it all.

It's horrible that John was murdered. I used to be a fan of John Lennons music untill I saw an interview of his oldest son Julian, lamenting the fact that John never wanted a relationship with him. I can't respect someone who sang about peace and denied his own son the right to a relationship.

Lennon has explained that he was too concerned about his career when Julian was very young and he did realize that he should be spending more time with him. However, the guy was constantly on tour in the biggest band ever during Julian's most formative years. By the time he married Yoko, Julian was a preteen and being pushed and pulled between John and his former wife Cynthia. Right before Lennon was killed, they had totally rebuilt their relationship.

Plus, Lennon was totally abandoned for much of his life by his parents before his mother was killed. Some people are doomed to perpetuate the hardships of their own youth. His solo song "Mother" shows the pain he himself felt.

I still remember I was in school and read it in the paper when I got up, I cried most of the day and many other people did also. Our teachers even gave us half the day off. A very sad day, he was truly a musical genius and is still missed.:(
