rankings

i know some of you have a "glass is half empty" approach. but im gona look on the bright side of things. yep. thats what im going to do. so there!

This isn't about a "glass half empty" approach. This is about "power rankings" are all bull****; always have been, and always will be. I think they're bull**** now, and I'm saying so. I thought they were bull**** when they were ranking us number one, and I said so. And I don't intend to ever stop saying that they're bull****, as obnoxiously as possible. Ever.

Rankings are worth the paper they're printed on...

Tell us how you really feel!

You people need to calm down. Since when did anyone say that power rankings were backed by sceintific fact? We read them for entertainment and just another view of which teams are doing the best at the time the rankings are released. If power rankings are BS like you say, then I don't wanna be around here when you read an article that involves the writers *gasp* opinion....

People comment on things here; it's kind of why message boards exist. I will only speak for myself, but I've seen many writers do abrupt about-faces over power rankings over one game or one injury, etc. My personal belief is that power rankings are for those who don't really follow basketball and need someone else to tell them about the season. And that's not meant to be derogatory. It's just my opinion.

That comment is just flat out silly. I guess I just didn't know about this hierarchy of fans that are just too smart for power rankings and sports journalism. How do you get your NBA information? I mean ESPN tells you about the season, Kings programs tell you about the season, and everything you read online tells you about the season. Unless you watch every NBA game on mute, you are one of those fans that needs someone else to tell you about the season.

Ummm, I'm going to guess that if a person paid attention to the won/lost record and knew the skill level of the teams that were played, they would know as much as power rankings tell us.

But power rankings are a shorthand way of figuring out all this stuff for the entire league.

I never read them but not because I am particularly knowledgeable. They just don't tell me anything I want to know.

Comments made that are a person's opinion are never flat out silly. They are an opinion...nothing more and nothing less. Just because someone disagrees with you, that is no reason to be derogatory.

I confess I think the power ratings are fun to read - they crack me up. Do I "believe" in them - I think of them as the fortune cookies of the NBA, just for fun.

I enjoy reading power rankings. Do they tell me what to think? nope. but they do provide tidbits of information that are interesting. Further, they provide a point of discussion.

IMHO its no different than an article listing a writers 'best teams in the nba'. In both cases the list and positioning is debateable. If this stuff was calculatable (is that even a word?) we wouldn't follow it with such fervor, because we'd know the outcome.

Okay, here's the cynical view -

Power rankings are there because

a. people consistently read them

b. they stir up controversy and

c. people consistently read them

They're just an opinion, but because they're written by an alleged "expert" they have an air of authority that people can either agree with or bitterly denounce.
