Purple Reign Needs Help with this Trade

Purple Reign

Starter
OK, almost a full day has past and I am still somewhat in shock that Chris Webber is no longer a part of the Sacramento Kings. My biggest question above anything else is why the management of the Kings would not give this team a chance to compete in the post season, and then make the assessments in the summer. Everybody has always said that this team would be judged by what happens in the playoffs. But in 2005 we have seen:

Doug Christie traded

Rick Adelman given a one year extension

Chris Webber traded

ALL IN A SPAN OF 60 DAYS.

But what is amazing to me is the response that I hear of the trade in the Sacramento media (fans calling talk shows) is about 70-30 in favor of Webber leaving. But on this board the response is about 80-20 negative about this deal. Why are the majority of fans at Kingsfans.com seem to be not down with this trade, where you hear nothing but giddyness within the community. What am I missing about this deal. Am I so enamored with Chris Webber that I can not see how this is going to work for the betterment of the team?

So my questions to those that are in favor of this trade. Explain to me three things.

  1. How is this trade going to make us better in 2005?

  2. Is there a market for any of these three players for Petrie to shop that would get us back players that would make us better in 2006?

  3. How is the Sacramento Kings offense going to be better when you ran your high post offense through the two best passing big men in the league in Vlade and Chris and they are now gone. In other words is Adelman’s system full proof to the point that you can stick anybody in and the offense runs fluently.

Convince me that this trade will benefit the Kings in the short term and in the long run?

webber's gone....and thats all that matters in the long run, of course.

The Maloofs did this for future freedom... in 2 years Webber commanded 35% of the Kings Cap Room... so they said this was the best time for him to be traded because of his good season.. all i got for you... but i still hate the trade...

  1. How is this trade going to make us better in 2005? We don't know yet. Geoff will have the ability in the offseason to maneuver through trades and FA signings much easier with Webb's huge contract off the books. Easier to move 3 smaller pieces than 1 huge one.....

  1. Is there a market for any of these three players for Petrie to shop that would get us back players that would make us better in 2006? Don't think of it like that. Many teams need cap filler, and these guys can be part of smaller trades also. i.e. Skinner and Thomas and a #1 for Carlos Boozer. Something like that....
  2. How is the Sacramento Kings offense going to be better when you ran your high post offense through the two best passing big men in the league in Vlade and Chris and they are now gone. They are changing their offense, obviously. They still have 3 scorers who are capable of putting up 30 or more per night, but now they are a better rebounding, defensive, and athletic team. They have a tremendous amount of frontcourt depth, and most importantly, the players can "take the lid off" attitude wise. Watch and see..

Do not doubt Geoff Petrie. It makes us all look goofy. Trust the man.

I am on the same page as you, exactly. I just don't get it. I understand it happened, I'll live with it because I have to, and I'll support the team because I love them. BUT, I just don't get it. Why take a player who's playing their heart out & get rid of them mid season, and get no one in return?? It's not like the trade was just too great to pass on, that's obviously not the case. It's not that Webb isn't playing well, he is. The ONLY thing I can figure out is that Petrie is looking forward, and in looking forward he wants to know what to do with Peja. With Peja unhappy and playing poorly, Petrie doesn't have a good basis to make a decision on. Come next year, it's going to be offer Peja A BIG contract or let him go. Maybe Petrie wants to see Peja play through the playoffs without a scapegoat to see what the real story is with Peja's disappointing playoff performances? Or maybe he just is anxious to apease Peja to convince him to stay. Anyway you see it, to me this trade looks like it's more about Peja than anything else, and that, to me, is just sad.

Peja played poorly because Webber jumped in after Peja played so well and wanted to become the go-to guy all of a sudden. Peja wasn't thrilled at that notion, so hence his poor performance. Then Webber turned around after losing to Minnie and called him heartless pretty much. That was like the straw that broke the camels back for him and that led to wanting to be traded. Petrie tried to get them together, but failed. He let Webber showcase what he has left and he got a bite from Philly. Not hard to understand. Petrie thinks Peja is still the player from last year, and he knows him pretty well. My personal confusion is where is the cap relief after the season is over? How do we free up cash to re-sign Peja considering that 2 of the 3 guys have 2+ years? Thats what confuses me.

1. How is this trade going to make us better in 2005?
I feel this will open up Miller, Bibby, and Peja's game, and let them become great. I would rather have a better Peja, Miller, and Bibby, than a good Webber, and an average Miller, Bibby, and Peja.

2. Is there a market for any of these three players for Petrie to shop that would get us back players that would make us better in 2006?
There really does not have to be a market for any of the three players we traded for. I think our team can keep these 3 and not have to worry about forwards coming off the bench for years to come. They are all above average bench players in my mind.

3. How is the Sacramento Kings offense going to be better when you ran your high post offense through the two best passing big men in the league in Vlade and Chris and they are now gone. I think That Miller and Bibby run that pick and roll offense wonderfully. Plus I feel that Miller does not hold on the the ball in the high post as long as Webber did so that should create motion in itself when players know that. So yes, in Miller's, and Bibby's hand, Adleman's plan will work fine.

Can we all trust "Kobe", errrrrrrrr Peja Stojakovic to be the leader of this team. I am being funny, but really does Peja have what it takes to put a franchise on his back to get the Kings where they need to get. And don't give me that "Detroit Pistons won the NBA title without a superstar" crap either. That was an isolated incicent. You have to go back to 1979 for an NBA team to have won without one superstar, go to player.

We do not have that player. Not to say that Chris was, but 'fo sho we do not have a player like that here in Sacramento.

I stated something similar in another thread earlier. D and rebounding should be better, We should be a little more up tempo. 20+ shots a game are now going to be divided between Peja, Miller, Bibby and Cat, our highest percentage shooters. That is a good thing especially for Peja and Miller.

2. Is there a market for any of these three players for Petrie to shop that would get us back players that would make us better in 2006?
I think it depends, depends how Thomas does, I think Big Nasty does have some value in a package deal. It would be easy to unload Skinner in a package deal type of trade. Thomas, it’s all going to depend on how he plays.

It will be easier to move any one part of these salaries lets say next year or the year after then one big monster salary on a player with injuries that is not getting younger. I can see the reasoning behind the trade, thinking okay Webb is not getting younger, he has gotten hurt year after year and if we don't pull the trigger now maybe later we won't be able to.

To answer the last part I think(hope) yes.

Here are some interesting stats to look at. Shows winning percentage per starting rotation used.
