Don't Make Me Use The Bat
The whole "well we didn't draft well in 1990 so we shouldn't even try now" line of argument is a strawman. Here's why:
1) We didn't do ANYTHING well in 1990, or for that whole decade around it. We didn't trade well, sign FAs of note, draft well, hire good coaches. I seem to remember the dance team even sucked. If you are going to sit around being traumatized by our raging incompetence at that time, then we might as well just fold the franchise because there is NO route to ever getting better based on the evidence of what we did back then.
2) In fact the two greatest players in franchise history, the only two star/superstar level players we have ever had, are a DIRECT result of having a top draft pick. We had the #3 pick in 1991. We traded it for Mitch Richmond. We then traded Richmond for CWebb. If we never secure that top pick, we never even have a franchise player and would a) probably suck to this day without the good years; and b) be playign someplace else now.
3) the twin positions 1) Geoff is God; and 2) if we get draft picks we'll screw up, are incompatible. Its either one or the other.
4) when we finally did get good our team was composed of:
C -- Vlade Divac (best FA ever signed by the Kings, and only a 12 and 8 center -- not even a star level player before we got him)
PF -- Webber, as successor to Richmond, all stemming from that #3 pick
SF -- Corliss (#13 late lottery pick)
OG -- Wahad (#11 mid/late lottery pick)
PG -- Williams (#7 mid lottery pick)
6th -- Peja (#14 pick)
And Corliss and JWill, lottery picks of our own, were turned into our contending backcourt of Bibby and Doug Christie.
