Postgame Quotes-vs. Boston

rick_adelman.jpg

Kings Coach Rick Adelman
“We talked about their transition and that they are going to push it every time they have a chance, they are going to run out and take jump shots and we just acted like we knew what was going on. Once we started getting back and making play at half court offense, things changed. On the offensive end everything was one-on-one, everything was a pass and they weren’t trying to force the issue. All we had to do was play and not force the offense. The third quarter we were terrific. We came out and started the third quarter, we really made shots and moved the ball. It was a combination of us not running our offense and when we scored they got out and ran on us it was a lack of concentration, what we certainly talked about yesterday and talked about it before the game started.”

“ I said it at every time out and at half time we take a jumper from the quarter and they get a lay out at the end. I just told them if you guys want to lose the game then go ahead and lose it, I am not going to call another timeout. I called a 20 second one at the first quarter and at the second quarter all you have to do is make them run their half-court offense. It’s mind boggling to me, but sometimes you have games like that.”

Brad Miller
“It was just a lack of effort. They made easy lay-ups and dunks. They had 24 or 26 fast break points in the first half, and that’s basically how they were scoring. Our guys just weren’t getting back.”

“You don’t know what’s going to happen in a 48 minute game. That’s the beauty of it, you’ve got to play the whole game.”

On whether the Kings have the the best frontcourt in the league:
“It’s a game by game basis. Some games probably, some games not. I love playing with Webb, and we’re really getting a feel for playing with each other.”

Darius Songaila
“You can’t just let them run over you. At some point, the guys on the court as well as the guys on the bench just have to say ‘that’s enough,’ and start playing.” On shots not falling in the beginning: “When you get the ball laid up on you on the other end, you kind of let your arms down, and it has an effect on your offense. But once we picked it up and started getting back on defense and getting the rebounds, things started falling back in order.”

Mike Bibby
“They just came out with a lot of energy, and got a lot of fast break points. Most of their points in the first half were off of the fast break.”

“We just have to share the ball. When we play together, we’re hard to stop.”

“Basketball is a game of runs. So when the other team is on a run, you’ve got to know how to withstand it afterwards.”

BOSTON CELTICS

Doc Rivers
“It was a great first half and bad second half. The number that stands out to me is 35 to 12, and that’s assists. In the first half we moved the ball, we shared the ball, we did a great job playing together as a team. In the second half I thought we each tried to win it by ourselves. The ball nevered moved, it never mattered who had it. As a team we still get set up by our offense which we have to change. We came out at the beginning of the third quarter and missed some shots, then stopped playing defense and that’s why we couldn’t run anymore.”

“We are who we are and we’re going to be that way, we’re going to run. Our running game was the difference in the first half. It proved that you can run with this team, but you can’t take the foot off the pedal.”

“We came out in the third quarter and just didn’t do anything. We walked the ball up the floor and we didn’t move the ball offensively, but defensively it happened because our offense wasn’t working.”

Gary Payton
“We played well, then the third quarter came and we stopped doing the things we do. We didn’t share the ball and we didn’t do what we did in the first half that we did in the second half. They started making shots and they started running. They did what we did in the first half and they came back and blew us up.”

Raef LaFrentz
“They did what they do. We played well the first half, they felt us out, they saw how we we were covering them and made adjustments at half time, came out and were able to get some pretty good looks. On our end we stopped moving the basketball. We couldn’t get stops so we weren’t running.”

Paul Pierce
“We had good looks, but we just didn’t knock them down.”

“It’s the tale of two halves. We just let our offense effect our defense and that’s how it’s been all year.”

Nice to hear Brad and Webb developing some chemistry on the court.:D

Its only evident as each game goes on. I like to see our big men moving. Pick-roll-pass to your running mate storming down the lane--they could do that all night for all I care. And on defense, they have about the same mobility (or lack there of ;)) that you see them switch a lot.

Webb was asked the same question, he said (paraphrasing) " Come on, if you asked me any other year what you I say...Of course I am going to say we are the best. I'd always bet on Brad and Peja."

The Inside Dish vs Celtics
by Devin Blankenship--December 5, 2004

It was a tale of two halves for the Sacramento Kings on Sunday night against the Boston Celtics. In the first half, it was…

The Worst of Times…
Boston came out of the gate in the first few minutes of the game and caught the Kings off-guard by pushing the tempo and trying to get the ball in the basket as soon as possible. And they pretty much didn’t stop until the end of the half.

Every single time, whether or not Sacramento scored, the Celtics would take off and run as soon as they got their hands on the ball. At first it seemed like the Kings might just be slow to adjust, but as the half progressed and the deficit grew from eight to 15 to 20 points, it became apparent that Sacramento had a major problem on its hands unless it could slow down Boston’s attack.

Some of the numbers were staggering. Boston outscored the Kings 36-18 in the first quarter and at one point was outscoring them 24-0 in fast break points halfway through the second quarter.

Thankfully, a run at the end of the first half cut the Celtics’ lead to only eight points, putting the Kings in position to make a run in the final two quarters…

The Best of Times…
Which is exactly what Sacramento did.

After a nice talk with head coach Rick Adelman at the break, the Kings came out in the third quarter and did exactly what Boston did to them in the first—hand it to them.

The Kings started making shots and didn’t stop, thanks in large part to Peja Stojakovic, who scored 12 points in third quarter on a barrage of outside jumpers. The Celtics seemed stunned and could only watch the Kings outscore them 38-17 in the quarter to take a 13-point lead into the fourth.

Sacramento didn’t let up either, at one point pushing their lead to 26 points, turning what was an early Boston blowout into a late blowout of Boston.

"It's the tale of two halves," said Paul Pierce afterwards. "We just let our offense affect our defense, and that's how it's been all year."

Random Thoughts…
  • Greg Ostertag was fired up on Sunday. He got up off the bench a couple of times during the game to cheer teammates, then screamed for the crowd to get excited after saving a ball from going out of bounds by throwing it off Mark Blount.
  • Got to give it up to Peja’s defense. He’s not known for being a stopper, but there were times last year, most specifically in the playoffs against Dallas, where he made big defensive plays at the end of games. After getting beat up by Paul Pierce in the first half on Sunday, Stojakovic held Pierce scoreless the rest of the game.
  • Darius Songaila plays it off like it’s no big deal, but this is the second straight year that he has played really well against the team that drafted him. It could be a coincidence but I’m not buying it.
  • If the Kings can beat the expansion Hornets on Thursday, it looks like it’ll be Minnesota’s chance to once again break a Kings winning streak when the team plays in Minneapolis on Friday.
  • The Celtics may not be a dynasty any more, but they still have a strong and loyal following. Tons of Boston fans attended the game and lined the court during shootaround to watch their team.

Peja Stojakovic
He was en fuego in the third quarter and his play sparked the Kings to a win.

So many play in the third quarter to choose from, but we’re going to go with Darius Songaila’s monster dunk late in the fourth quarter—it got everyone off their seats.

Good luck convincing anyone who saw that dunk in the fourth that it's no big deal to Songaila...

Pedja after the game for B92-TV

"we started bad and allow them to score 26 fast break points and also allow the many offensive rebounds. i am not sure wheather we were too relaxed or wheather we undereastimated them but either way we did not play our BB."

"We tried to focus on offense but it did not work. We had to change our game an focus on things which hurt us in the first half. We also had to move better."

"in the 2nd half we played differently; very agressiv with lot of help defense. We were focused on stopping P P, who is one of the best scorers in the league, and we did a good job. We also played king ball offensively."

" good defense causes fast break opportunities and easy baskets. After easy baskets , tough threes are falling too. At the end it looked like an easy win but they did cause us some trouble. Now we play charlotte and then we are going east."

Darius Songaila

"We increased our level of energy and put more effort into defense and our transition game which gave the result at the end."

"I am satisfied with my performances this season. We are winning and that makes me happy. Tonight I struggled in the first half but in the second I did OK."

" we have some new players and we also lost a key player. We needed some time to get the rythm but we are playing well now. We just should not allow us to perform like in the first 20 minutes tonight."
