Possible Long Term Coaches?

Really hope that's it. Just because Smart has a two year contract doesn't mean we can't go after someone else (Sloan, Laimbeer, etc) and just drop Smart / demote him if we actually manage to net a long-term solution.

According to Jones, Smart's contract guaranteed through the end of the season. I'm guessing there's a team option for next year

Thought this was interesting, again from Voison. Don't know if she's blowing smoke or not.

Inside the organization, the thought goes something like this: Rather than rushing out, grabbing the first high-profile available coach and tossing him into the midst of a bang-bang season, see if Smart can transform a moribund roster of highly compensated professionals into an entertaining and interesting bunch. You know? Make some progress? Turn them into something at least imitating a team? Otherwise, according to sources, the offseason plan is to put the fullcourt press on a veteran coach from a group of available candidates that includes Jerry Sloan, Jeff Van Gundy and Larry Brown, among others.

Now that would make sense! Signing him for 2 years guaranteed?! Not so sure! If this is true its a good move. You give the guy a chance and remove that interim tag so player will look at him as a coach but you are also keeping you options open. Who knows, for all we know Smart could be the next Phil Jackson or he could be next Kenny Who!

If its a guaranteed deal, it just makes no sense. Then again, neither do many moves made by this organization recently.

In the Sacramento Bee they said the second year is a team option.

They want to give the guy some leverage with this bunch. Otherwise he's a lame duck, and that's asking for even more trouble.

This.

I like that there is a team option for the 2nd year. It says he is our guy, but if he bombs, we can pull the plug.

I was hoping for Brian Shaw before Theus/PW...and rumor was he would employ Robert Horry as lead assistant...yes THAT Robert Horry! BUT...Shaw has a great pedigree, respect, championship rings...and would bring Horry with him with obvious respect for being one of the most clutch players EVER!...And you'd have to love the irony! Who knows if Smart sticks...or who replaces him...I just hope the Shaw/Horry coaching staff gets major consideration.

We actually have very good personnel for the Triangle too. You don't need a "true' PG just guards. Jimmer can be a BJ Armstrong/John Paxson type and Tyreke can be a Jordan/Kobe. Cousins is exactly the type of post to build the whole thing around.

The Triangle is notoriously difficult to pick up, so it would likely take a while, but if Shaw can sell it the system would take care of itself.
