Pistons release F Derrick Coleman

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) - Derrick Coleman didn't last the season with his hometown team.

The Detroit Pistons on Wednesday released the veteran forward who has been hobbled by injuries the last two seasons.

A Detroit native who was acquired from Philadelphia in August, Coleman played just 10 minutes in five games, averaging 1.8 points. He missed 17 games with a leg injury, a season after missing 48 contests due to an assortment of injuries.

Coleman, 37, is making $4.5 million this season and is scheduled to make $5 million next season. The Pistons can buy out the final year of his deal for $2 million.

The first overall pick of the New Jersey Nets in 1990, Coleman has career averages of 16.5 points and 9.3 rebounds in 781 games.

To take Coleman's roster spot, the Pistons signed point guard Anthony Goldwire to a 10-day contract.

Goldwire has career averages of 6.5 points and 2.9 assists in 231 career games. The Pistons are his eighth team.

Am I the only one who thinks that Kings could actually use his talent off the bench. He could provide SOME scoring off the bench and he's a decent midrange shooter and passer. He's experienced too so he would probably fit the offense pretty easily to give some time off to Miller and Webber when they are struggling. He might even create some matchup problems ...

i wouldnt take a chance on somebody like coleman who could be a problem in terms of team chemistry.And we have darius and greg who do thier jobs just fine.

motivated and a few years younger, yes, if he wanted to help. Actually one of the few big men in the league skilled enough to fully run our system.

But now? Out of shape old malcontent? Eh...
