Let me preface my soapbox comments here with the statement that I am in no way a political or financial expert. I'm only a 22 year-old college student that is trying to understand this whole deal myself. With that said, here I go...
I'm sick and tired of those opposing the arena using the same crappy excuse NOT to build it. Every time the arena has come up, what do we hear? The same old jibberish that will never get done anyways!
1. FUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS: This is the #1 card that the people will use and it will always get sympathy! I don't get it! People in Sac County are willing to fund public schools with more crappy teachers and garbage curriculum rather than look to the future of the city and build a sports arena that brings excitement to the town. I don't know about you guys, but I'm only 4 years removed from public school, and all I can say is that I didn't get much out of it at all! Pretty much anything worthwhile in my life I've learned in my college years! And the sad thing is...Sac County Public Schools are getting worse! THE FUNNIEST THING ABOUT IT IS THAT OUR TAX DOLLARS ARE ALREADY GOING INTO PUBLIC SCHOOLS!!! What's a .25 sales tax increase towards public schools really gonna do to improve it anyways? Can someone explain that to me? All I see it doing is paying to hire more crappy teachers, and buy more rediculous textbooks with a skewed curriculum.
I think it's hilarious that people are willing to allow and even PAY MORE for a bad trend to continue rather than think outside the box and try something new! Taxpaying parents are willing to give hundreds of thousands of dollars to a school to build a new gymnasium or astroturf their football field, but aren't willing to fork over .25 cents a year to a franchise that has made this town worth coming to! I say this from personal experience! At Rio Americano, the moment the school received any fundiong from the district thatnks to tax dollars, our athletic director would lobby new bleachers, a new pool, or a new paint job on the basketball gym floor....and 9/10 times, he GOT IT! Rio has an excellent pool, their basketball court gets painted every year pretty much, and the bleachers in the gym were replaced 5 years ago for the first time in the school's history I think. I didn't see any of that money go into the curriculum. If it did...no one seemed to notice!
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that my high school wasn't the only one ot do that! What I'm saying is taht school officials many times don't have their priorities straight with the money they recieve, so why should we trust them? Because they are working for schools? I'm sorry, but that doesn't always make you trustworthy! Besides making money, I think the Maloofs have the general good of Sacramento on their minds with this arena and quality of life issue! If they didn't,, they'd jsut pack up and move without a fight!
If you want to know what a downtown arena will do for downton Sacramento and the surrounding area...just drive down to AT&T Park, or go to The Delta Center in Utah, or Camden Yards in BAltimore, and tell me you wouldn't want that kind of atmosphere for this town! That's what I feel the Maloofs want, and I think that's what the city should want too if it has any guts at all!
